  • Goedhuis, November 2007

Aromatic and upfront, this 1999 offers lots of mouthfilling velvety fruit with appealing savoury qualities. Its hedonistic, fleshy style is telltale 1999, yet its minerality gently guides it displaying its excellent terroir. A true crowd pleaser with soul.

  • Robert Parker, April 2002, Score: 88

Licorice, creme de cassis, and toasty oak are typical of this classic Pauillac. It is full-bodied, with excellent sweetness, grip, structure, and more tannin than many 1999s possess. This structured, muscular effort will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016.

  • Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 87-89

Ripe, sweet, black currant, underbrush and earth scents emerge from this dark ruby/purple-colored wine. With low acidity, a seductive, fleshy, chewy texture, and very good to excellent concentration, this charming, precocious Pontet-Canet is best drunk during its first 10-14 years of life. Drink: 2001 - 2015.

  • Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 87-89

One of the successful Pauillacs of the vintage, the 1999 Pontet-Canet is rich, sweet, and seductive. Burly and big for a 1999, this dark opaque purple-colored effort exhibits copious quantities of licorice and black currant aromas along with mineral and new oak notes. Medium to full-bodied and tannic, with a rare thickness (atypical for this vintage), this wine possesses good stuffing. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2001, Score: 16.5/20

This very modern wine certainly makes an impression. Glossy and dramatic it may be slightly over-extracted and finished very dry but it is certainly big. Drink 2007-2017

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
