    A beautiful wine and one of my favorites from this estate, this blend of nearly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot is aging impressively. Dense ruby/purple in color, with creme de cassis, charcoal, and sweet leathery and chocolatey notes intermixed with the classic Pauillac cedar and spice box, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, with sweet tannin and a long finish. It seems to have inched into its window of full drinking maturity, and will stay there for 10-15+ years.

    This flamboyant, dense, opaque purple-colored wine, made from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, is muscular, with an unctuous texture and high levels of tannin as well as extract. Compared to its other sibling in the Mouton-Rothschild stable, d'Armailhac, it is far more closed and tannic but still somewhat ostentatious, with smoky, leathery notes intermixed with oodles of black fruits and spice box. The wine may, however, have trouble eclipsing the brilliant 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.

    Gentle, flattering nose. Quite dry and taut with some spine and power. Slightly too dead on the finish to be truly refreshing, but set for the long term like all the wines from the Mouton stable.

    67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot. 72% became the grand vin. Good colour. Rather firmer and more austere than D'Armailhac. Slightly dry on the nose. Medium-full body. Some tannin. The tannins area little well covered. For once I prefer Armailhac. Good fruit and good grip. But not the same flair or opulence. But this is much less evolved. Very good at best. From 2008.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
