  • Goedhuis, April 2002

This is a Mouton of great power. Its tannins are firm but ripe, its fruit lush and opulent. Thiscombination assures great longevity and its classical structure draws comparison in the Wine Spectator to the famous 1986.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 94

The 2001 Mouton-Rothschild contains 20% vin de presse and 12.6° alcohol. It has a vibrant, captivating bouquet that explodes from the glass with precocious black cherries, sous-bois, mint and a touch of Seville oranges, displaying precision and class. The medium-bodied palate shows good density and offers sappy black fruit, white pepper and just a touch of tobacco. Quite muscular for a 2001, and perhaps missing the clarity and pixelation that the next winemaker, Philippe Dhalluin, subsequently imparted. This is a thoroughly enjoyable Mouton-Rothschild, even if it is not the same pedigree as recent vintages. Drink 2021- 2055

  • Robert Parker, June 2004, Score: 89

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the opaque purple-colored, chunky 2001 Mouton-Rothschild does not possess the finesse and stature often achieved by this first-growth. It offers a tell-tale cassis-scented nose, and a monolithic, medium to full-bodied style with relatively high, austere tannin in the finish (a characteristics I also noticed in cask). A dry, angular, backward effort for the vintage, it should be forgotten for at least a decade. Let's hope the fruit continues to expand and sweeten, but that's no sure thing. Anticipatedmaturity: 2013-2025+.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2002, Score: 18.5

Very, very deep crimson. Very, very rich and full, and then very, very silky texture - a winning combination. Definite spice. Very full and ripe. Round, satin textured. Could do with very slightly more acid?! Quite a sudden end, but lots of work on texture rather than flavour. Very, very rich black fruits. Tannins are quite rigorous. Deeper, tougher and more dramatic than most. Drink 2009-2025

Mouton Rothschild is the only wine to have been elevated to First Growth status since the original classification of the Medoc in 1855. The exceptional success and status of Château Mouton Rothschild can largely be attributed Baron Philippe de Rothschild and his charismatic daughter Baroness Philippine. They recognised the extraordinary potential of the estate, which today spans 82 hectares, and devoted their lives to ensuring that potential was realised. Baroness Philippine's children Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, true to their grandfather’s and mother’s work, are now committed with the same enthusiasm and determination to perpetuating this quest for excellence. This most flamboyant and glamorous estate is famous for its artistic connections, embodied in the grand vins's label, redesigned each year by such legends as Picasso, Miro and Warhol. Its impressive and well-deserved reputation is based above all on the opulence and excellence of its wines.Read less

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
