  • Goedhuis, March 2018

This famous estate’s wine was served at the wedding of Henry Plantagenet and Eleanor d’Aquitaine and its regal qualities most certainly remain this year… Full of cassis and youthful dark berry fruits. The deliciously open sweet richness is perfectly balanced with the tightly woven grippy tannins. This has a real core and heart and shows a wine of breeding and class.

  • Goedhuis, April 2006, Score: 91-93+

Classically Margaux in style with fine, ripe tannins, this full-bodied wine has aromas of blueberry, spice and minerals. Owner Emmanuel Cruse said that he has never seen such high sugar levels. Indeed, his highest Merlot vat registered at 15.7% alcohol. Thank goodness for blends. Yet this 2005 exuberance has created a wonderfully alluring wine - sensual yet powerful. Drink 2011- 2025+.

  • Robert Parker, June 2015, Score: 96

The more serious grand vin twin, the 2005 d’Issan, has a stunning nose of spring flowers, blackcurrant and blue/black fruits galore, and an impressively opaque dark plum/purple color. With a rich, concentrated and pure mouthfeel, wonderfully sweet tannin, full-bodied density and richness, but elegance in abundance, this is a stunner, and one of the great Margaux of the vintage. Drink it now and over the next 20 years.

  • Robert Parker, April 2008, Score: 95

Along with the 2000, the 2005 is one of the two greatest d’Issans I have ever tasted. Kudos to proprietor Emmanuel Cruse for creating this beauty. Its dense purple hue is accompanied by aromas of camphor, forest floor, blackberries, cassis, and a hint of spring flowers. Full-bodied with superb richness, purity, texture, and abundant, sweet tannin, it should hit its stride in 3-4 years, and last for 25+. Bravo! Drink: 2011 - 2033.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 92-94

While some octogenarians may argue that 1900 is better, this is the finest dIssan I have ever tasted. The 2005 boasts a deep plum/ruby color as well as a beautiful projected bouquet of flowers, licorice, sweet currants, plums, cherries, and smoke. There is lovely purity in the mouth as well as an etched, precise character, stunning concentration, decent acidity, and an impressive finish that lasts nearly 45 seconds. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025+.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2006, Score: 17.5

Dark crimson. Very energetic, aromatic nose. Full-blown and opulent and very 2005. Lots of tannin, but ripe tannin. Very bright fruit. Good example of the vintage and it also expresses Margaux. Good structure. Hits the palate throughout the tasting experience. Drink 2014-22.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2006, Score: 89-91

Full and silky, with lots of berry, chocolate and spice character. Wonderful texture to this wine. Best ever from here? Like cashmere. Almost 92-94. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Producer

Château d'Issan

Many collectors view this château as well worth its status... and they are not alone. For centuries, d'Issan has been a coveted treasure. According to local lore, it was served at thewedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet as well as a favourite of Emperor François-Joseph of Austria. Since 1945, the property has been owned by the Cruse family with Emmanuel Cruse at the château's helm.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
