  • Antonio Galloni, March 2016, Score: 90

The 2013 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is polished and refined to the core. Mocha, smoke, black cherries, licorice, torrefaction and dark spices meld together in the glass. This is a relatively open, mid-weight vintage for the Serre Nuove, with expressive aromatics and open-knit fruit. The new oak is especially apparent here. In some recent vintages, Le Serre Nuove has come across as almost too serious of a second wine. That is not the case in 2013, where Le Serre Nuove is quite distinct from Ornellaia, and also much more approachable right out of the gate. The 2013 also has a relatively high amount of Cabernet Franc because less was used in the Ornellaia than normal.

  • Producer Note, March 2016

A marvellous summer and a cool, sunny September made it possible to achieve perfect maturation of the grapes despite the difficult flowering period, with wines that express a particularly elegant side. Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2013 has an intense, bright colour. The nose is vibrant and fruity underscored by delicate toasty notes. On the palate, the smooth, silky texture contrasts with tannins of great freshness. Whilst its structure will enable it to mellow with age, the crispness of the fruit and its soft, fine character make it perfect to enjoy straight away.

Producer

Ornellaia

Since being founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia has firmly established itself as one of the most revered wine estates in the world. Situated on the Tuscan coast, within the iconic Bolgheri appellation, the estate has long been dedicated to producing wines of unrivalled beauty and elegance. Thanks to the combination of Bolgheri’s unique terroir and growing conditions, Ornellaia consistently produces world-class wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, all of which are full of Mediterranean charisma. With an eighty-person strong team working full-time, Ornellaia’s passion and attention to detail is essential to its legacy; complacency is forbidden, and such is their meticulous approach, that everything is done on a grape-by-grape basis. Since 2006, Winemaker and Estate Director Axel Heinz has attributed a single word to each year, with the intricacies of individual vintages being wonderfully captured by a chosen contemporary artist and reproduced as an exclusive label, as well as a site-specific work of art that remains part of the estate’s permanent collection. Not only is Ornellaia an ambassador for the region, but the estate also reaffirms the belief that Bolgheri’s distinctive climate and diversity of soils creates wines as complex and delightful as any in the world.

Region

Tuscany

Arguably the most celebrated of all Italian regions for its sun, delicious food and rich wines. Chianti lies at the heart of this centrally located, picturesque and expansive area. Tuscany is also home to Chianti's more powerful cousin, Brunello di Montalcino, illustrious Super Tuscanblends and spicy, exuberant whites.
