Goedhuis, October 2018
An outstanding vintage, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013 was the third very dry year on the run and could have been challenging. Adversity, however, often reveals strength, and as always, quality of site and producer are the deciding factor in any vintage. 2013 shows off in a glorious way all the pedigree of The Mascot. The younger vines of Harlan Estate, BOND, and Promontory bore beautifully healthy grape clusters with small, dense berries. The juice was concentrated, balanced with fine acidity; the skins thickened by wind yielded ripe tannins of great structure and strength. Where the 2012 vintage is supple, plush, and expansive, 2013 is dense, deep, and complex — yet they share a vibrant core.
Region
Napa Valley
This small town north of San Francisco has grown up to be one of California’s most famous wine regions. It is home to opulent Cabernets and sweetly-spiced Zinfandels, grown across many sub-regions including Stags Leap, Rutherford, Oakville and others. Cooling ocean fogs roll in from the Pacific at night and burn off in the summer sunshine, keeping the region cooler than you would expect for its latitude, and help produce some of the best Californian wines. Napa wines have the concentration and structure to age magnificently.
