A rich, powerful wine, the 2014 Lafleur hits the palate with a mélange of exotic spices, flowers, crème de cassis, sage and lavender, all supported by firm yet impeccably balanced tannins. The blend of 56% Cabernet Franc and 44% Merlot meld together the expressive aromatics and structure of Franc with the mid-palate voluptuousness of Merlot, all in a striking, showy wine that will provide immense pleasure to those lucky enough to find it. The dense, persistent finish is totally alluring.

This is very tight and chewy with polished and intense tannins. Full-bodied with blueberries, blackberries, minerals and fine tannins. This is more Pauillac than many top Pauillac estates. Cabernet franc always makes the quality here and it’s 56% this year. Rest is merlot. Superb.
My Right Bank wine of the vintage, along with Ausone (St-Emilion). 56% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot. Depth, complexity and finesse. Marked by the Cabernet Franc. Very fine tannins. Beautiful texture. Finesse and disguised power. Considerable ageing potential. Fresh, long, persistent finish. Drink: 2024-2050
Very much a scaled up version of its second wine Pensées (q.v.), but with a very powerful and solid backbone, suggesting that this wine is built to last, this is a long and very centred Lafleur with great style and grip. Serious throughout and very intense it craves time to mellow and mature but the results will surely astound.
44% Merlot, 56% Cabernet Franc. Bright red. Very savoury and lively on the nose. Very neat and precise and so bright and confident. Not heavy at all – just perfect prettiness. Very pretty and fresh. Long. Baptiste thinks it’s more Lafleur than 2014. Pretty cherry flavours. Not big and dramatic at all. Very fresh and precise after something a little bonbon-like. Just a little dry on the end at the moment. 13.8% Drink 2021-2033
With its high percentage of Cabernet Franc, Lafleur is unique among Pomerol properties. It’s also a Bordeaux that has as much in common with Burgundy as it does with its peers. Floral, scented and ethereal, the 2014 has finesse and sweetness, super fine tannins, incredible length and notes of raspberry and green herbs. Utterly delicious, even at this young age. Drink: 2020-32
The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
