  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 91-94

A reticent if broad-ranging nose is composed of quite deeply pitched essence of plum, dark currant, violet, lilac and a hint of sandalwood. There is a highly beguiling inner mouth perfume to the overtly powerful and muscular large-scaled flavors that possess a relatively refined mouthfeel thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins supporting the beautifully long finish. While this is certainly a powerful wine it is what I would describe as an elegant Grands Ech. Drink 2032+

Region

Grands Echézeaux

One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Much more compact and homogenous than the neighbouring Echezeaux, the Grands Echézeaux vineyards are owned by around twenty producers - very modest in Burgundian terms. The most celebrated producers include Domaines de la Romanee Conti, d'Eugenie and Mongeard-Mugneret. These fine wines are richly complex yet balanced and have enormous ageing potential.
