  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Domaine de l’Arlot is 15 hectares in total, and of them, Clos des Forêts St Georges covers 7.2 hectares. Here the domaine’s intense but expressive style is on display. Unlike in previous vintages, this has been 100% destemmed before fermentation. The wine’s character combines both red strawberry and raspberry flavours with some darker tones of cassis and hedgerow fruit. Its finish shows great purity and drive and the new oak is a sweet and luxurious accompaniment to the fruit core.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 92+

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Fôret-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a transparent bouquet of red cherries, kirsch and rose petals, perhaps just missing a little complexity. The palate has plenty of depth and grip, offering dark berry fruit, cola, white pepper and a touch of garrigue toward the finish. A little heavy-handed, perhaps, but there is still sufficient freshness on the finish. This should improve with time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2023 - 2038

  • Neal Martin, Janaury 2019, Score: 91-93

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint-Georges is completely de-stemmed, unlike the Clos de l’Arlot, partly because of the analysis that suggested it should include stems. It has a very pure bouquet, a little more opulent than the Clos de l’Arlot, featuring black cherry, blueberry and light floral scents. The smooth, rounded palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and denser than the Clos de l’Arlot, but then again, maybe the Clos de l’Arlot has more personality. 2021 - 2037

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-92

Not surprisingly, the aromatic profile is quite similar to that of the 1er. There is more size, weight and muscle to the denser middle weight plus flavors that culminate in a markedly serious, mouth coating and sneaky long finish. This is very clearly built to age but it's not overly austere; with that said, this is clearly going to require extended patience. Drink 2029+

Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
