  • Goedhuis, April 2019, Score: 91-93

From the famous house of Moueix an appealing blend of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc. Nothing is forced in this wine, it is very poised and graceful, with hints of dark mocha and spice. Lovely sweetness and a touch of tannic grip on the finish. Very good.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2019, Score: 91-93

Made from 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Plince opens with cedar, unsmoked cigars and smoked meats suggestions giving way to baked plums, blackberry pie and black raspberries plus wafts of Ceylon tea, hoisin and Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has wonderful richness and depth with loads of exotic spice and savory layers contained in a beautifully plush texture, finishing long.

  • James Suckling, April 2019, Score: 93-94

A wine with lovely depth of fruit and ripeness, yet always refined and integrated with ripe fruit, fresh acidity and a long and satisfying finish. Could be best ever.

  • Decanter, April 2019, Score: 92

This is enjoyable, very Pomerol with a nice lift, though less structured than some in the Moueix line up. It has strong liquorice flavours, with dark chocolate and grilled rosemary – it’s gourmet, but with restraint and juice though the dark cassis and blackberry fruits. Another wine where you feel there is an accessibility relatively young without sacrificing the ageing ability. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2019, Score: 17+

I like the nose here even though it is not that ripe or round because there is some complexity which I think comes from the Cabernet Franc in this blend. The herbal flourishes and floral notes add much-needed detail to a red-fruited chassis and the oak, while strident, supports these elements, too. Not bad at all and, while it needs ten years, this will be a fine drop in due course.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2019, Score: 92-95

Warm and steeped in feel, with fig, blackberry and plum fruit notes, layered with tobacco and warm earth details. A strong showing.

Producer

Château Plince

Owned by the Moreau family, and supervised by famous Pomerol winegrowers, J.P.Moueix (owners of Château Petrus), Château Plince at 8.3 hectares is planted with 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fifteen months are spent ageing the wine, in one third new oak barriques producing a wine that is rich and structured.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
