  • Goedhuis, December 2019

Clos des Chênes is Volnay’s most recognised premier cru. Thomas blends two parcels of 45 and 65-year-old vines. The 2018 is a fabulous model of the power and broad-shouldered potential of this vineyard on the upper slopes. It retains many red fruit characters but has layers of rich, full tannins. A big wine for the future.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru comes from 45- to 65-year-old vines in a more exposed location than the Les Carelles, at 300m altitude. This year it includes 40% whole cluster. It has more complexity and precision on the nose by comparison with the Les Carelles, featuring lovely raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A finely tuned, precise Volnay with superb precision on the finish. This comes highly recommended. Drink 2022-2045

  • Burghound, April 2020, Score: 91-93

Ripe yet appealingly cool aromas are comprised by notes of red and dark raspberry, plum and violet. The impressively rich, powerful and muscular large-scaled flavors display evident minerality on the robust, serious and long finish. This is a classic Clos des Chênes that is built to reward long-term cellaring. Sweet spot outstanding. Drink 2033+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-93

Dense purple centre. A high-class nose, albeit quite discreet at first. Thomas felt that his Clos des Chênes used to be on the massive side before he tamed it with some whole bunch vinification. This has the most significant volume of fruit of all in the cellar, dark with the beginnings of some chocolate. Slightly dry tannins here but the fruit should win.

We are delighted to introduce the wines of Thomas Bouley in 2015, joining our selection of great Volnay domaines. Those customers who bought Burgundy en primeur in the early days of Goedhuis Co may have a sense of déjà vu! Johnny first bought from Thomas’s father Jean-Marc in the 1980s. After a few years’ sabbatical it is wonderful to be reacquainted with this prestigious domaine whose wines we consider very special indeed. Much has happened in the intervening years. Son Thomas now makes the wines and is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most dedicated growers, with an unstoppable energy and enthusiasm. They have also just completed one of the area’s most sophisticated new wineries right in the heart of Volnay. This investment will ensure that the already high quality of the domaine will only ascend. This is a great estate making wines which truly reflect Volnay and Pommard.Read less

Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
