  • Goedhuis, December 2019

Is this Les Suchots’s year? In 2018, I have not tasted a poor cuvée of this great, grand cru surrounded vineyard. A darker fruit profile than some in the cellar, with lots of wild black fruit. The tannins are imposing and have a ripe intensity. A step up in power, its quality and origins are on display. Profound flavours and tremendous aging potential.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru contains 35% whole-bunch fruit this year, matured in 40% new oak. It has a gorgeous bouquet that is typical Les Suchots, featuring opulent dark cherries, raspberry coulis and impressive mineral notes. The wood is very well assimilated here. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannins, crisp black and red fruit and touches of dark chocolate toward the structured, almost Malconsorts-like finish. This is a fascinating and well-crafted Vosne-Romanée that will age with style. 2023 - 2048

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 91-93

A notably spicy nose combines wood nuances with the ripe essence of various red berries and floral influences. The refined medium weight flavors possess a beguiling texture despite not being especially dense while delivering excellent length on the balanced finish that tightens up considerably as it sits on the palate. Note that this too is clearly built-to-age and a wine that is going to need at least a few years. Drink 2030+. Sweet spot Outstanding

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 92-95

36% whole bunch. Tasted before the Clos des Forêts because of the quality of the tannins. Clear bright red of no especial depth. There is rather more weight of fruit on the nose, flirting with reduction. Then a slight mocha note – coffee rather than chocolate. Some light fresh raspberry, just a little pepper. Lean, quite high acidity, perfume returns at the back. This is still very early in its life and it does have intensity rather than weight. Very persistent.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
