Sitting just below Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, this is such a highly regarded lieu dit. Slightly closed on the nose, although unsurprising given its tight structure. On the palate the wine opens up to show flavours of lemon zest, frangipane and nougat. Great weight. This is a top-class village cuvée.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 88-90

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres has a fresh, well defined bouquet with gentle orange blossom and light passion fruit aromas, a little mintiness in the background. The palate is nicely balanced with good concentration from the opening, moderate acidity, harmonious with a fresh, orange rind and quince-tinged finish. A very capable Chassagne to enjoy over the next decade. 2022-2032

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2020, Score: 89-92

Clear pale lemon with an incisive lightly reductive nose. This starts leaner than expected, but soon fills out into a soft plump pillow of fruit, soft pears, but then the tension returns with some warmth too. The aromatics are not over-ripe and I did not pick the high alcohol level here. No doubt about the concentration, nor length and there is just enough acidity. 4 stars

Region

Chassagne Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
