  • Goedhuis, December 2021

From the lower slopes of the hillside of Beaune, this is typically more forward and open than the Grèves. It is deliciously perfumed with a red cherry and raspberry bouquet. Harmonious with lace-like tannins, this so giving it is tempting to drink immediately. This would however be a mistake, as it has the poise and balance to develop for many years.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 87-89

The 2020 Beaune Clos de Roi 1er Cru is overtly floral on the nose with attractive scents of wilted rose petal and peony percolating through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, quite spicy, maybe just a touch of greenness on the back palate here. Fresh, but I find more cohesion and harmony on the Savigny-lès-Beaune at the moment. Drink 2024 - 2034

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 88

Once again, the nose is very ripe while stopping just short of being over the top with its combination of poached plum, spice, leather and warm earth. The succulent, round and seductively textured flavors possess an opulent mid-palate, indeed they're almost thick, before terminating in a lingering if noticeably warm finale. This is an interesting wine in several respects though I confess that it's not my particular stylistic preference. Drink 2026+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5

Always a show-stopper, this is another brilliant performance from Tollot-Beaut and I this must be one of the most complete portfolios in the 2020 vintage. The oak and acidity are perfectly judged against the imperial fruit and the prodigious length. A great wine and a supreme Premier Cru in terms of value for money and sheer class.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-91

First picked, and in time. The colour is purple without the black and the rich cherry-raspberry fruit, This is rather lovely in its intense 2020 style, and though the fruit is quite extrovert the tannin/acid structure will need quite a long time.

The wines of Tollot-Beaut are some of the best we taste every vintage. Uncomplicated, pure and fresh, they epitomize everything that we love about wines from the Côte de Beaune. In addition, their fleshiness and approachability makes them perfect for cynics who claim that Burgundy is not their cup of tea. The 22-hectare domaine has been family-owned for years. Today, the young, friendly and exceptionally bright Nathalie Tollot manages the domaine with her cousins. The wines are vinified fairly traditionally. About 40% of the crop is de-stemmed, though this varies depending on vintage. The wines are fermented in open-top wooden vats before being aged in oak barrels that are 10-50% new. Very lightly fined and filtered before bottling, the resulting wines are often opulent with noticeable density, always clean and superbly pure. Just wonderful Burgundy.Read less

Region

Beaune

The viticultural capital of Burgundy, Beaune was the headquarters to the Duchy in the 13th century and is now home to many winemakers and négociants. The appellation of Beaune includes both reds and white wines, though the quantity of red is significantly greater. The soils are predominantly sandier than either those to the north in Aloxe Corton or those to the south in Volnay or Pommard, producing wines that are supple and early drinking in nature. Similar to other surrounding Côte de Beaune appellations, there are no grand crus, but it does offer 42 premier cru sites, some of which are exceptional. These include Les Grèves, Les Teurons and Les Vignes Franches.
