  • Neal Martin, September 2024, Score: 92+

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a relatively straightforward yet well-defined, somewhat "cool" bouquet with darker fruit and a light marine scent. The palate is medium-bodied with a toasty entry. The oak is a little pronounced here and masks some of the terroir expression. It is more of a brutish Chambolle at first, quite Morey-like, though it settles in the glass, coheres and gains more roundness with time. I believe this has more to give. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 94-96

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru, which contains just a little new oak, has a lifted, quite intense and beautifully-defined bouquet, quite floral and elegant, gaining power with every swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with superb weight and density, real horsepower here and yet it never loses sight of its elegance and precision. Slightly savory, akin to the tang of dried blood, on the finish? Bon vin! Drink 2025 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 92-95

This was the only wine in the range that displayed more than a smidgeon of reduction though it's enough to suppress the underlying fruit. As is usually the case, there is more size, weight and muscle if not necessarily more minerality to the medium-bodied flavors that display focused power on the austere, compact and wonderfully long finish. This too is going to require extended patience and I doubt that it's going to make for especially interesting drinking before 10 years have passed. Drink 2035+. Sweet spot. Outstanding.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2021, Score: 91-93

Quite a bit of the 2020 Chambolle Cras has been matured in foudre, my sample being a blend of that and barrel. The darkest colour of the whole cellar with a black centre. There is a slight vegetal reduction on the nose which should pass. Darker fruit and some spice and blackberry notes. Close to 14% here. While the fruit fills the mouth very nicely the Cras this year is a little less typical of Chambolle.

After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
