    La Garenne sits on the higher slopes of Puligny and produces a remarkably harmonious wine, often earlier drinking than some other wines from this commune. It displays a shining lime-green colour. The striking mineral and seashore scent recedes as a floral honeysuckle nose unfurls. Hugely appealing volume and deliciously succulent, this has richness and hedonistic attraction. Lovely.

    The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru offers scents of citrus fruit, pressed white flowers and a touch of hazelnut. This opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a discrete peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Impressive energy here. Good potential. Drink 2025 - 2045

    Glowing pale primrose. The nose shows a little youthful tension, with the detail of the fruit still to follow. There are quite evident grapefruit and citrus notes, rather surprising, possibly picked a day too early. Middleweight –there is never a lot of flesh here -but clean, long and balanced.

Region

Puligny Montrachet

Puligny Montrachet is known as the most delicate of the white wine appellations south of Beaune.Its wines tend to be linear and mineral offering delicate floral and orchard fruit aromatics. Its village and premier cru vineyard area total slightly over 200 hectares but almost half of them are premier cru making them one of the highest proportions of quality vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Several grand cru vineyards are present, the most notable being Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachetwhich it shares with neighbouring Chassagne, but it does have the extraordinary Chevalier Montrachet and the tiny Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet all to itself. There are a handful of red wines grown, but they tend to be quite light and need to be drunk in their youth.
