  • Goedhuis, December 2022

This is a highly respected lieu-dit, at the northern end of the village sitting just below Premier Cru Champeaux, and the vines are nearly 120 years old having been planted in 1903! One of the earliest vineyard parcels purchased on Fabien’s mother’s side of the family. Lush dark Morello cherry, controlled weight, with a feeling of earthy terroir abundance and excellent firmness on the finish.

More subtle though still easily perceptible wood is present on the cooler nose that mixes both red and dark currant with less floral influence and more earth. There is outstanding concentration to the slightly bigger-bodied flavors as the old vine sap coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the built-to-age and impressively lengthy finish. This is terrific for its level and recommended. Drink 2033+

There is an extra boost of fruit and energy here and a hint of exoticism. I am a G-P fan and this is a classic example of oak in perfect balance with the fruit. Given the cuvée, it is a forward vintage, but there is crisp acidity here, so it is unlikely to fall over for a decade or more.

Taking its name from founders Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot back in 1954, this domaine has grown from 7 to 22 hectares under the direction of their son Vincent Geantet and his children Fabien and Emilie. Having outgrown their historical cellars, they invested in a new winery, and their wines show all the advantages that this additional space provides. Traditionally, they de-stem 100% of their fruit and allow the must a few days of cool maceration prior to fermentation starting, which enhances the colour and aromatic content of their wines. Through a combination of old vines (plenty of centenaries in their vineyards), sumptuous fruit concentration and generous new oak they make a hedonistic style of Burgundy.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
