  • Antonio Galloni, August 2024, Score: 94

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is sleek and polished to the core. Silky tannins wrap around a heart of dark-fleshed fruit, mocha, spice and worn-in leather. Deep and quite structured, with impeccable balance, the 2021 is impressive for a young wine off this estate.

  • William Kelley, September 2024

Made from fruit grown only on volcanic soils, this is a poised and highly elegant take on what can be achieved with Bordeaux varietals in the Napa Valley. The nose is sophisticated, nuanced and expressive. Notes of ripe, fleshy cassis are shot through with cedar, cigar box, cloves and cocoa nibs, giving much to savour. Dense and rich on the palate, this wine is generous and has all the structure to cellar beautifully for many years. Lifted, shimmering acidity brings verve, poise and tension, restraining the generosity of fruit to give a wine that has an understated confidence in its own charms. The tannins here are ripe and have a pleasing chalky grip on the finish. This is a wine that will bring great pleasure for many years to come.

  • Jane Anson, August 2024, Score: 98

Intense, powerful and concentrated, full of dark brambled fruits, with cocoa bean, smoked almonds, espresso, a series of tiny pulses of crushed rock minerality. Captures the power of Rutherford without sacrificing finesse or pleasure, just a gorgeous wine that is so easy to fall in love with. The muscular tannins need a few years before fully opening, and could be held back in bottle for a decade or more, or ensure a good long carafe.

Producer

Inglenook

Inglenook, founded in 1871 by William Watson, George Yount of Yountville’s son-in-law, was always one of the most respected names from Napa’s great Rutherford vineyards. However, despite this extraordinary history and reputation, it is possibly the last 40 years that have been most exciting, firstly for the vineyard and, more recently, for the brand name Inglenook Rubicon. This part of the story starts in 1975 when Francis Ford Coppola bought the house and a section of the vineyards, with some of the proceeds from The Godfather. Over the following 20 years, he bought the remaining vineyards and estate. He has since made major long-term investment in both the vineyards and winery, and Inglenook once again sits at the top of the Californian hierarchy. Initially he sold his wines under the Niebaum-Coppola name, but in 2011 he was finally able to purchase back the name Inglenook, and so it was that a Californian icon was reborn under the name Inglenook Rubicon.

Region

Napa Valley

This small town north of San Francisco has grown up to be one of California’s most famous wine regions. It is home to opulent Cabernets and sweetly-spiced Zinfandels, grown across many sub-regions including Stags Leap, Rutherford, Oakville and others. Cooling ocean fogs roll in from the Pacific at night and burn off in the summer sunshine, keeping the region cooler than you would expect for its latitude, and help produce some of the best Californian wines. Napa wines have the concentration and structure to age magnificently.
