The 2022 Angludet, which was cropped at 26 hl/ha, has a delightful bouquet with black cherry, iodine and violet aromas developing with time. This has lovely purity that blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, very pure and poised with fine tannins. It's tensile and not a powerful Margaux, but very seductive with a touch of salinity urging you back on the finish. This will be ready early on but will drink well for many years.
The Bordelais machine has already begun to alienate potential consumers with exaggerated claims to the effect that 2022 is "the best vintage ever"; yet there are some wines that do actually appear to merit such hyperbole, and the 2022 D'Angludet is one of them. Offering up deep aromas of inky cassis, plums, pencil lead and subtle spices, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a broad attack, ripe acids and a supple, seamless profile, concluding with an expansive finish.
Château Angludet (Margaux) 47 Merlot, 40 Cabernet Sauvignon, 13 Petit Verdot 65% new oak, 35% amphoras, 30% of oak is new 13.5% alc 26 hl/ha Harvest took place from 6 - end September Merlot leads the way in this blend for the first time in history. The Cabernet berries were so small that they were relegated to second place in the mix! The vines had no blockage during the hot spells, and the maturity continued perfectly at Angludet. Plush, pure and superbly detailed, this is a stunningly bright and pure style with balanced alcohol levels despite the focussed, pristinely pure fruit. This is such a classy, layered and integrated wine, and Daisy Sichel explained that winemaker Ben Sichel wanted to retain a perfect natural balance in the wine, so he blended it before ageing. This is a remarkably refreshing wine, and it is pinpoint accurate. As Daisy said, “2022 was full of surprises”. And she is, of course, correct because this is a triumphant wine. I tasted it twice, once at the Château and once at the generic Margaux tasting, where it shone like a beacon against its peers.
The intensity of the violet-edged colour extraction is pretty remarkable in the Médoc, and this manages to get the balance right between intensity and appeal, alongside vibrant raspberry, brushed damson and bilberry fruit, given lift by pomegranate and and passion fruit, and a curl of smoked earth. One to look out for, should be great value. 35% amphoras, 65% barrels for ageing. Drink 2027-2044.
The 2022 Château d'Angludet is the first vintage to contain more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured in 35% amphora plus 30% new oak, this is another Margaux sample where patience is necessary. It only opens after 10 minutes in the glass, revealing black cherries, black olive compote and pressed violet aromas. It has a gorgeous creamy texture, svelte and luxuriant, yet the finish has an underlying classicism and a sense of precision. This is frequently one of the best value wines on the Left Bank, and if you can think of a reason not to have any in your cellar, send a postcard to the usual address. 2029-2055
Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
