  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 90-92

The 2022 Montlandrie was picked 8-23 September and matured in 50% new oak. The Cabernet components in the blend defined the nose that leans toward the Left Bank - graphite and tobacco filtering through the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture, white pepper and clove, quite structured for this Castillon Côte de Bordeaux with a similar sapid finish as the Les Cruzelles.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Montlandrie is a powerful, driving wine. Beams of tannin and acid run through a core of bright red-toned fruit, lending notable energy and tension throughout. A wine of size and volume, Montlandrie offers tremendous intensity as well as vibrancy. Gorgeous. Drink 2025-2037.

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 92-94

Ch Montlandrie 2022 has a subtle depth of flavours on the nose, led by floral aromatics and sandalwood hints from the toasted French oak. Supple and rounded in the mouth, the black fruit palate is ripe but savoury, with an almost bracing acidity and a firm tannic core. This will benefit from at least 5 years in the cellar.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 93-94

Sea salt and grilled sea weed. Dark fruit, but so umami. Medium to full body with fine and chewy tannins. Crunchy.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2023, Score: 16+

Deep colour. Dark-fruit and floral notes with a stony freshness behind. Assertive tannins but cushioned by the fruit. Full-bodied but balanced, the finish chalky and dry. Potential to evolve. (James Lawther MW) 14.5% Drink 2029 – 2038

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 93

The limestone soils in Castillon are naturally cooler than many parts of Bordeaux across in all vintages, and yet even here the harvest began on September 8 through to 23, highlighting the unusual conditions of the vintage. The resulting wine still reflects the site, with its salinity and grip, and waves of soft rose aromatics. Gentle, supple tannins and fruits, enjoyable and finessed, carefully calibrated given the heat of the summer. 37hl/h yields. 50% new oak, Noemie Durantou winemaker.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 91-93+

Based on 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Château Montlandrie has lots of ripe red and black fruits supported by notions of loamy soil, savory spices, and leafy herbs. It's concentrated, medium to full-bodied, has building yet beautiful tannins, and a great finish.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 18+

Goodness me, this is a serious wine with immense ambition and all of the ingredients required for it to turn into a superstar. A particular degree of tension starts as the wine is poured and the perfume rises from the glass. There is blue, black and red fruit here that rolls out like a finely woven rug, unfurled in one lavish action, and it appears to unroll for minutes over the horizon of one’s palate. Complex fruit notes form a part of the picture because powerful earth tones beat away in the heart of this wine alongside the tri-varietal flavours. It is built for the long haul, but it already looks sublime. This may well end up being one of the most important pan-Bordeaux flavours of the year, and given its recent pricing, it is likely to be an essential pick for all Bordeaux fans.

Côtes de Castillon

Lying directly to the east of St Emilion with vineyards running from the river Dordogne up into the rolling hills, Côtes de Castillon is an area which produces reliable, good value reds from Merlot. In particular certain wine estates have been purchased by the owners of more illustrious Right Bank properties, such as the Thienpont and von Neipperg families. The consequent input of investment and expertise has seen the quality of Côtes de Castillon wines soar.
