  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This Premier Cru owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards, and this was a favourite plot at that time. A thought provoking scent with a multitude of spices, clove, cinnamon and oregano ahead of flavours of dark cherry and warm toffee. Confident and assertive on the palate, prior to a structure of tense muscly shoulders and great persistence on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 89-91

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru, blended with 30% whole bunches, has a slightly backward bouquet with scents of potpourri infusing the red fruit, perhaps needing a little more mineralité to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, hints of licorice developing towards the finish that will hopefully develop a little more nervosité during the remaining élevage. Drinking window: 2026-2038.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 90-93

There is just enough reduction to overshadow the nuances of the nose. More interesting are the finer but not richer middleweight flavors that possess both good detail and evident minerality on the slightly more complex and persistent finale. Lovely. Drinking 2030+.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 91-94

Medium bright crimson. This is from the barrel rather than the tank, and so is a little bit less resolved in the fruit vs oak department. However, a good acid balance sets the fruit off to good advantage at the end. As always, a discreet premier cru but this has the best length of the three so far. Drink from 2030-2036.

They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
