  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Right at the heart of the Gevrey Grands Crus, the 12.9 hectares of Chambertin sit on a bedrock of fossil-rich limestone that’s topped with marl soils of varying colours and consistencies. Rebourseau own a half hectare of vines here, and this is undoubtedly one of their flagship wines. The 2023 is a triumphant expression of Chambertin; the intensely aromatic nose immediately captivates, seducing with notes of violets, fresh wild herbs, black cherries, raspberry compote and a trace of savoury, mineral-laden smoke. Plush and succulent, this weighty and rounded wine remains lively and engaging due to the line of blood orange acidity that runs through the mid palate. Supple, polished and velvety tannins provide an effortless structure, which eventually gives way to a peppery, moreish finish. Quite simply a delight.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-95

Blended with 15% whole bunch, the 2023 Chambertin Grand Cru is more expressive on the nose than the Clos de Bèze. It has great terroir expression and complexity. The palate is well balanced, pure and sensual with svelte tannins, a keen line of acidity and satisfying grip and structure toward the finish. Very persistent, this is a far superior Chambertin compared to the 2022.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 93-95

Here there is just enough reduction to knock down the fruit save for spicy nuances and a touch of wood toast. More interesting are the moderately dense, vibrant and tautly muscular larger-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the more youthfully austere, balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This is seriously impressive and a wine that should amply repay extended keeping yet it’s not so compact that it couldn’t be reasonably drunk after 7 to 9 years.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2025, Score: 92-94

The 2023 Chambertin Grand Cru is also attractive, revealing aromas of sweet dark berries, orange zest, rose petals and cinnamon, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant palate. A touch more elegant and understated than the Clos de Bèze, but not as persistent, the two are close in quality.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 96-98

Mid crimson purple. There is a little more precision to the nose. A more profound sense of majesty. The fruit has a magical sense of energy, with nothing too blockbuster. All in red fruit, a refined sensuality and texture, with fine-boned tannins that lend enough structure. 15-20% whole bunches work magically here, seamless, I did not spot them on their own, but I can see that extra lift now. This is very fine. Drink from 2033-2043.

Over the last 150 years, the estate has grown to now include an exceptional 5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, 1 hectare of 1er Cru and 6 hectares of village wine, managed by Jean-Baptiste’s descendants, Bénigne and Louis de Sorrel. The most recent development in the estate’s history was in 2018 when Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owners of Ch. Montrose in St Estèphe, purchased a majority interest in this fine Gevrey Chambertin domaine. These are exciting times for the two families. They made a substantial investment in new cellars, a new winery and continued attention to biodynamic viticulture, which they embraced in 2009. This means that the Rebourseau estate is destined for even greater recognition in the future. Wine maker Bénigne is adjusting the oak management programme: his father Jean preferred to use old oak for the maturation of his wines, whereas Bénigne favours a little more new oak to enhance fruit characters, and foresees that the perfect balance for the top cuvées will be 60% new oak.Read less

Region

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
