  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The fruit for this Grand Cru comes from four sources within the Bressandes vineyard; two close to Ladoix, where the soils have a high clay content, and two closer to Aloxe Corton, which enjoy a higher percentage of limestone. These radically different soil types combine to give a very complete Pinot, and the 2023 proves no exception. With inviting notes of black cherry, forest fruits, violet, and spicy black pepper, this wine entices from the outset. Layers of lush ripe fruit are wrapped around architectural tannins, while wet-stone acidity ensures the wine vibrates with tension and drive. Although overtly structured, this is an accomplished, elegant wine that wears its muscular framework lightly.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 92-95

Picked on 7th September, not yet in bottle. A central dark purple with more of a ruby rim. Quite a different bouquet because the fruit has a wilder side, wood strawberries, blueberries, than the usual berry fruits. Claude loves this wine! The stems give their little brambly note as well. A touch of bramble jelly on the palate but the structure holds this all well together. 13.8% with a long supple finish, alongside adequate tannins.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
