  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, June 2025

A much broader and textural wine in comparison to the Fósil. Creamy citrus flavours bounce off the tongue with some tropical notes of passion fruit and an herbaceous edge. Lovely long finish and stony minerality. Drink 2025-2032.

  • Wine Advocate, May 2025, Score: 94

Deriving from three sites in the Monestario section of Gualtallary, the 2023 Botánico leads with a high-toned, citrus-driven, herbal and balsamic bouquet followed by a similarly electric and focused palate. It concludes with a long, tensile, bracing finish that regenerates the herbal perfume first observed on the nose and lingers with crushed-stone nuances. This is an expressive, linear representation of contemporary Argentine Chardonnay.

  • James Suckling, May 2024, Score: 95

This is a very contrasty white with a hint of tropical fruit to the apple and mineral aromas that follow through to a bright and vivid palate. Lovely acidity that gives it length and intensity. A new wine. Think grand cru Chablis. Drink or hold.

  • Vinous, November 2024, Score: 96

A rising star in the Familia Zuccardi portfolio, the 2023 Chardonnay Botánico comes from their vineyards in Gualtallary, Tupungato. Fermented and aged in concrete, the warm 2023 vintage saw harvest occur nearly a week earlier than in 2022, as early as the beginning of February. The 2023 reveals subtle herbal aromas of vermouth, lavender and herbs with a hint of hops. Broad and fairly rich, with good tension on the palate, it finishes with a touch of green apple. A true reflection of its origins, its chalky texture defines the mouthfeel.

  • Tim Atkin, June 2024, Score: 96

If Fósil is Zuccardi’s Puligny-Montrachet, then Botánico is the bodega’s Meursault, give or take the lack of oak. Buttery, creamy, textured and intense, it’s a layered, complex Gualtallary white with aromas of aniseed and chamomile and a focused, thrilling palate of lemon zest and beeswax. 2025-32

Region

Argentina

Soon after gaining independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina began attracting successive waves of European immigrants, who brought winemaking traditions and vines with them. For a long time, Argentinian wine was defined by high yields and sun-ripened grapes, however, since the 1980s, the industry has benefitted from a process of modernisation. Combining tradition with extreme altitudes, modern Argentine winemakers have placed more focus on planting in cooler areas, with the aim of prolonging the ripening stage and therefore maximising the quality of fruit. No wine-producing country in the world has made more progress over the last few decades than Argentina, and it is now one of the top exporting countries across the globe. Much of this success can be credited to the hugely popular full-bodied reds made from Malbec, which for years was the most planted black grape in Argentina. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are commonly found and produced in a full range of styles. Mendoza is the main wine region of Argentina. A vast and tremendously varied province nestled against the Andes, its exceptional fruit is the result of the region’s extreme altitudes. The higher the vineyard, the cooler the nights, allowing the wines to retain bright acidity and colour intensity, while the greater effect of radiation increases the concentration of flavour. Mendoza is now home to some of the finest wines of the world, with Catena Zapata leading the way in terms of reputation and quality.
