  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025, Score: 90-92

The 2024 Cantemerle proved to be one of the dark horses of our visits! Tasting at the Château after touring the brand new, almost completed winery, you can tell that great things are afoot here. Zesty and pure on the nose, this is incredibly aromatic from the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Sappy, taut cherry skins, a touch of orange zest, and damsons and plums fill out the harmonious palate, with a nice touch of cloves and toasted coming through. There’s a lovely elasticity to the tannins, and a long refreshing finish. Very juicy and moreish already, but will also benefit from a short to medium-term ageing. 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

  • Neal Martin, April 2025, Score: 90-92

The 2024 Cantemerle has a nicely composed bouquet with blackberry, sous-bois and subtle cedar scents percolating through with time. The palate is fresh and vibrant with saturated tannins, a keen line of acidity, well-integrated new oak and a very well-proportioned finish. This exceeds my expectations and is a great success in the context of the vintage. It could end up at the top of my banded score.

  • James Suckling, May 2025, Score: 93-94

A creamy and delicious red with blackcurrant, berry and mineral aromas that follow through to a medium body and a delicious finish. This will be a crowd pleaser.

  • Jane Anson, April 2025, Score: 92

Great quality, sappy, fragrant, savoury Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics. On the palate things open to show squid ink, juice, raspberry puree, liquorice root, really enjoyable, good texture. 48hl/h yield, 35% new oak, Laure Canu director, SMA Group owners. New winery to be ready for the 2025 harvest.

Despite its classic claret spirit, it has an unusual connection to vineyards thousands of miles away. In the early 1980s, much of Cantemerle's Cabernet Franc was changed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot by top grafting. Mexican viticulturalists, specialists in this field, were flown in from the Napa Valley to carry out the procedure. Quite an extraordinary project for a ‘mere' Haut Médoc.Read less

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
