  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025, Score: 94-96

Whilst labelled Sauternes, this has Barsac grace and refinement representing its true home, through and through. Scented clementine and acacia honey, there is a silky smoothness in the palate. Flavours of pannacotta, Chantilly cream and syrup of pears. An eye-catching velvet like texture and at 125 grams/litre sugar, wonderfully sweet, but not over the top and a refreshing lift of acidity at the end lifts the palate perfectly. 84% Semillon, 14% Sauvignon and 2% Muscadelle.

  • Neal Martin, April 2025, Score: 91-93

The 2024 Doisy-Védrines does not possess the same level of complexity as the Doisy-Daëne on the nose, although it is clean and fresh with wild honey, peach skin and saffron scents. I would like to see more vigor. The palate is balanced and quite linear, with a touch of peach mixed with apricot and pear. It's less unctuous than historical vintages, though vibrant from start to finish. This is an early drinking but still very appealing Barsac.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2025, Score: 92-94

The 2024 Doisy-Védrines is a potent, surprisingly tightly wound Barsac that is going to need at least several years to come together. That won't be an issue, as Doisy-Védrines ages spectacularly well. Today, though, it is far less charming and seductive than it is most years. Bright floral and tropical notes open with some coaxing, but this is a wine for readers who can wait.

  • James Suckling, May 2025, Score: 93-94

An unctuous, delicious and medium-sweet Sauternes. Medium-bodied with medium acidity. Nice fruit, a caressing texture and a juicy expression on the finish.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2025, Score: 17

Straw colour. Slightly muted nose. Rich and full on the palate with a bitter, botrytised finish. Plenty of length. Should keep. (JL)

Sauternes

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
