  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025, Score: 90-91

Incredibly fresh nose, on the leafier side of Cabernet, but neither green nor unripe. The nose opens with fresh blackcurrant leaf herbaceous-ness and a touch of mint, followed by juicy plums and blueberries. There's an appetising touch of cedar and cigar tobacco too. The tannins are pleasingly fine, and the finish is long and refreshing. Quite old school and classic, but in the best way possible. Should make for some very good early to mid-term drinking. Cabernet Sauvignon 52%, Merlot 42%, Petit Verdot 6%.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2025, Score: 91-93

The 2024 La Lagune is a rich, deep wine. Dark-toned fruit, new leather, scorched earth, graphite and dried herbs all run through this potent, expressive Haut-Médoc. The tannins still need time to come together, but there is enough depth and overall pedigree for that to happen. Although it is not especially showy today, La Lagune has a good bit of potential. Tasted two times.

  • James Suckling, May 2025, Score: 93-94

A balanced, textural and refined red with cherries and sweet spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Velvety texture with a long, denser finish.

  • Jane Anson, April 2025, Score: 91

Attractive leafy aromatics, juicy and chalky, this is tasty, old school, charming. These are not generous Cabernets but they have finesse and balance. Earlier drinking than recent vintages at La Lagune, this provides a great window into the skilful winemaking going on at this dynamic estate, owned by Caroline Frey. Harvest 23 September to 9 October. 50% new oak. 3.4 pH.

Producer

Château La Lagune

One of the most popular wines during these campaigns - due to its excellent value. Unlike itsclassified companions, La Lagune is the only third growth that is not from a communal appellation.Comprised of very light sandy-gravelly soils, many believe its wines are similar to those of Pomerol or Graves.

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
