  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 90-92

This 35 ha vineyard sitting between Ch Phélan Ségur and Ch Meyney compises 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. It is a superb example of the marriage between complex dark fruit flavours and structured substance that is so much the personality of the appellation of St Estèphe. Wine director Laurent Dufau and his team have crafted a stunning wine, with a striking damson sheen. On the nose it is beautifully scented, full of violets and hedgerow fruits. A wine of great harmony, with a refined tannic structure. Not an absolute power house, but with its delicious balance it will be a classical mature claret with age.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 88-90

The 2015 Capbern is striking. Pliant, open-knit and seductive, the 2015 offers lovely radiance and superb balance, especially at this level. Black cherry, plum, mint and violet notes are laced into the aromatic, silky finish. There is so much to like in this forward, fruit-driven Saint-Estèphe. The blend is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Tasted three times.

  • Robert Parker, Feb 2018, Score: 86/100

Blended of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Capbern spent 18 months aging in barrels, 60% of which were new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has a meaty/gamey nose over a core of baked blackberries and cassis with an undercurrent of dried thyme. The medium-bodied mouth is firm, grainy and a little lean. Lisa Perrotti Brown Score 86/100 Drink Dates 2018-2026

  • James Suckling, April 2016, Score: 90-91

Very fine and polished with lovely integration and finesse. Medium to full body, fresh finish. Harmony here.

  • Decanter, April 2016, Score: 90

Great freshness of bountiful, ripe fruit and fine ripeness from 68% Cabernet. A lovely wine from perfectly managed vineyards. Drink 2019-2028

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 16.5

(A single block wine which used to be known as Capbern Gasqueton) | (68 Cabernet Sauvignon, 28 Merlot, 4 Petit Verdot) | 60% new oak – will be matured for 18 months. | 13.7% alc. In 2015, Capbern seems to have secured its own identity fully and it is now a worthy addition to the roll call of famous Saint-Estèphe Châteaux. Pure, purple-hued, forward, smooth and juicy, this is a sprightly, clean wine and with Petit Verdot making itself heard in the blend, bringing spice and structure to the crisp tannins. Delicious and immediate this is a very satisfying wine.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 16.5

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. 47 hl/ha. 60% new oak. Bright crimson. Racy nose. Lighter than some vintages. The oak is just a little sweet and obvious at this stage. Pretty astringent finish. Drink 2023-2030

Château Capbern

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
