Conti Costanti | 2020 Brunello di Montalcino

The Conti Costanti style is characterised by striking elegance and intensity, combining Montalcino's characteristic power with a fragrance and purity derived from high-elevation vineyards in the northern part of the zone. These vineyards are planted over 400 metres above sea level on galestro soil, which is typical of the area. The 2020 is wine of huge concentration and intensity and one that will require at least 8 years of aging. It is quite simply a brilliant effort.

Costanti thrive in warms years such as 2020 due to their north easterly exposure and cooler altitude. Understandably Andrea Costanti therefore places 2020 amongst a trilogy of superb releases. Flavours of blood orange, redcurrant, sweet red cherries and warm spice lead to a long, concentrated finish. This is a knockout rendition from the Costanti team that will need to cellar for a minimum of three years.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2024, Score: 93-96

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is intense and exotic, bursting from the glass with a wild blend of crushed cherries, autumnal spices, cedar and dried blood orange. This is juicy upon entry with depths of tart red berry fruits that drench the palate in primary concentration. A whiplash of acidity adds a spicy sensation toward the close. It tapers off with a sweet and sour concentration, leaving edgy tannins to resonate and the mouth watering for more as hints of licorice slowly fade. This wild child will need some time to come fully into focus. Andrea Costanti commented that the 2020 is the most concentrated wine he's ever produced from the perspective of dry extract and polyphenols, all balanced by 5.8 grams per liter of residual acidity. It also finished at 14.4% alcohol (the highest ever here).

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 17.5+

Deep ruby. Pure, concentrated red fruit and sweet raspberry nose that is still not entirely open. Hints of black pepper. Compact cherry and raspberry-fruit palate and still embryonic. Really fine yet still austere fruit filled with finely ground tannins Very long and focused but far from ready. Real potential for ageing here, which it also needs. (WS)

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2024, Score: 98

The 2020 Brunello from Costanti is an absolute stunner. All about fragrance, flavor and finesse, the elegant palate opens with captivating aromas of iris, violet, perfumed berry, dark spice, whiffs of forest floor and eucalyptus that on the palate transform into wild cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, grilled rosemary and truffle. Tightly knit, velvety tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity provides impeccable balance. A salty note lingers on the persistent finish. Drink 2029–2035.

  • Monica Larner, November 2024, Score: 94

From galestro-rich soils, the Conti Costanti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino offers a full bouquet of sweet fruit and spice. The wine is plump and rich in personality with sweet tannins and some phenolic heft due to the warm growing conditions. However, its velvety texture and full-bodied approach offer enough padding to smooth it over. Production is 34,000 bottles and larger formats.
