    Gazin’s 2022 is a return to top form. Their stock of old vines on gravel and blue clay helped mitigate the excesses of the summer heat, resulting in a generous but not overripe style. Blackcurrant, crème de mûre, and a discreet touch of new oak unfold from the glass. The impression on the palate is silky, with fresh black fruit and vibrant acidity offsetting the finely grained, almost chalky tannins. This has good grip and a nicely perfumed finish.

    The 2022 Gazin has a ripe and generous bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, touches of star anis and light floral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and good depth. It's a muscular Gazin with grippy, tobacco-infused black fruit toward the finish. This is a solid and dense Pomerol that manages to retain freshness and delineation. It will certainly require time, but I'm hoping it develops a bit more pizzazz by the time of bottling. Never underestimate Gazin - it may well happen. 2030-2060

    Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, cherries and spices, the 2022 Gazin is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with excellent depth at the core, sweet tannins and a long, expansive finish. Despite the drought, the vineyards performed better in 2022 than in 2020 at this address, and the result is one of the better vintages for Gazin in recent years.

    A very juicy and nicely chewy young red with black berry, chocolate and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins and a fresh and persistent finish.

    Deep purplish crimson. Similar dried-herbs notes to La Croix de Gay. And much less sweetness on the palate than some of its peers. Perhaps it will blossom into something distinctively special but for the moment it looks a little ungenerous compared with other 2022 Pomerols. Rather tough tannins here in abundance. Drink 2029 – 2043

    Lots of spiced black cherries, currants, chocolate, and spicy notes emerge from the 2022 Château Gazin, a richer, medium to full-bodied Pomerol with plenty of mid-palate depth, building tannins, and outstanding length. The tannins will need to be watched here, but this is clearly an outstanding wine in the making.

    A serious Pomerol even in the lightest of vintages, so it really can relax into its natural character in 2022. Strict tannins, but that is often the case for this wine, relaxing into liqourice, cocoa bean, espresso, rosemary, underbrush, slightly drying on the finish, but this has a ton of impact, it has all the elements for ageing, an impressive wine.

If one were to choose one château in all of Bordeaux to live in, this might well be the one. Beautifully serene with soft hues and stone walls, it is inviting and warm. Unfortunately, we were only invited to taste, so our residential fantasies soon had to fade into the morning mist.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
