A Trio of Standout Burgundy Red From Simon Bize

Domaine Simon Bize sets the benchmark for quality in Savigny Lès Beaune. We are delighted to present a selection of their wines that are all ready to pop and pour right away.

The Domaine is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune and two fine grand cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. It is now under the careful management of Chisa, the late Patrick Bize’s wife, and Marielle Grivot, Patrick’s sister. They like to continue his practice of whole bunch fermentation and gentle handling of the fruit during the vinification process. The result is always very stylish wines, which possess the sweetness of fruit and subtle core of tannins, which are such a character of the wines of Savigny.

Distinctly ripe aromas include those of poached plum, black cherry and earth nuances. There is both good volume and vibrancy to the lighter weight flavors that are rustic but delicious and refreshing with enough structure to repay 3 to 5 years of cellaring.

  • Goedhuis, December 2020

With 11.2 hectares of village Savigny, Domaine Bize has an expanse of vineyards, the oldest planted in 1939 and the most recent in 1979. Always an archetypal Savigny, this is perfumed with wild Alpine fruits so typical of whole cluster winemaking. This comprises layers of sweet flowing fruit underpinned by fine-grained tannins and a gentle touch of freshness. This is a great introduction to the domaine’s classic style.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards has a very well-defined, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, cracked black pepper and hints of vervain tea. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and again, quite peppery in style, leading to a harmonious, elegant finish. Very suave. Drink 2023 - 2036

  • Wine Advocate, Janaury 2020, Score: 90-92

One of the more muscular wines in the range is the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine evocative of blackberries, rose petals, dried herbs and spices. Its generous core of fruit largely conceals a chassis of fine, youthfully chalky tannin.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2020, Score: 88-91

Medium deep purple, considerable elegance to the nose, a marriage of discretion with depth of fruit. This offers tension, volume, precision, and power with some liquorice notes after the dark raspberry. 4 stars

  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Les Fourneaux is the first premier cru as you enter the village of Savigny from Beaune and tends to be the most forward of the domaine’s premiers crus. Very perfumed with wild strawberry aromas. A very charming wine with lovely purity.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 88-90

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Fournaux 1er Cru offers earthy, brambly red fruit on the nose, along with touches of undergrowth and bay leaf, all nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with mulberry and blackberry notes, soft in the mouth at first, yet the structure makes its presence felt toward the saline finish. Very fine and classic in style. 2020 - 2032

  • Burghound, April 2019, Score: 89-91

This is the first wine to display much reduction and it's enough to suppress the underlying fruit at present. There is more size, weight and richness if less minerality to the muscular medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a rustic, serious and sneaky long finish. Patience definitely advised. Drink 2029+

  • Decanter, October 2018, Score: 93

Fourneaux is both a village and a premier cru parcel with the latter appellation occupying the top half of the site. This is a serious Savigny, if that's not an oxymoron since the village is known for the elegance of its wines. It has impressive focus and freshness, fine-grained tannins and a sappy, spicy finish. Drink 2021-2027

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2019, Score: 17

Mid crimson. Riper on the nose than the Grands Liards. Smells rich and generous, which it is on the palate. Velvet-smooth tannins and deep, caressing and then a burst of freshness on the finish. Complete, delicious. Drink 2020-2027
