Spanish Summer Whites | Muy bien! Uno mas!

Spain is unquestionably Europe’s most exciting wine region. After decades of isolation under Franco, its wine scene has exploded since democracy and EU membership. Ancient terroirs and forgotten native grapes have been rediscovered, with a new generation championing gnarly old vines and crafting some of the most unique wines around. The result? Wines with classic poise, a sense of place, and a joyful drinkability - made for wine lovers.

The Goedhuis Waddesdon team, from the Costa del Bermondsey, have carefully selected the below list of wines we loved after tasting across many, many different wines. Galicia in particular impressed - wines of precision, elegance and utter moreishness.

    A Viura based wine, from 20-year-old vines across Rioja Alavesa, grown on cool, chalky clay soils and trained both as bush vines and on trellises. Fermentation takes place in Hungarian oak barrels and gentle bâtonnage adds a wonderful texture to this massively overachieving wine. Soft pear and honey notes, with a touch of spicy vanilla and gentle nuttiness.

    From vines that are, on average, 25 years old, planted at elevations exceeding 600 metres on sandy granitic soils with clay deposits. Aromatic, herbal and joyous – rich orchard fruit, wonderful precision and incredibly sophisticated. Lively and lithe, with plenty of lipsmacking acidity.

    The youngest of the portfolio is the 2024 Louro, which has a balsamic, herbal and faintly medicinal nose (it does smell a little of bay leaf, which is what "louro" means in the Galician language!), quite aromatic. It fermented in 3,500-liter oak foudres, where the wine matured with the lees for four months. It doesn't lack ripeness; it comes in at 14% alcohol but retains good freshness and acidity. It's approachable and has a tender texture

    The 2024 Godello Louro do Bolo from Valdeorras is nuanced, with hay, anise, acacia and a hint of reduction layered over barrel influence. Dry and intense, it balances richness with vibrant acidity, enhancing the variety’s delicacy without losing intensity

    From a true Spanish superstar – the man may look wild but the wines are anything but – this is a brilliant example of how smart Godello can be. La del Vivo is a step up entirely – fragrant, floral and aromatically fascinating. Nose is rich and layered, ripe pear and honeysuckle over flint and beeswax, with a smoky, lees-derived depth. Palate is broad and textured, concentrated stone fruit and preserved lemon, saline and mineral through the mid-palate, with real grip and a long, savoury finish. Would give many a white Burgundy a run for their money!

    Pazo Señorans is one of Rías Baixas' leading producers. When Marisol Bueno and Javier Mareque bought this 16th-century estate in Meis in 1979 - then planted with kiwi orchards and old-vine Albariño - they quickly recognised the grape's potential, and helped establish the DO just a decade later. Close to the sea on sandy, granite-derived soils, the estate's Pergola-trained vines produce wines that showcase Albariño's ageing potential like few others can. Hugely expressive, bright and brilliant fruit – pear, lemons, peach and driving salinity – this is glorious. Summer in a glass.

Ultreia Godello is his ‘village’ wine, with plenty of juicy apple and dried orange peel. Nose of white peach, quince and a chalky, wet-stone edge. Palate is textured and saline, with orchard fruit and citrus pith carried on good acidity; finishes long, dry and mineral.

  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • EP: En Primeur. These wines are lying in the Domaines’ cellars until shipping. They can only be purchased In Bond. On arrival in the UK these wines can either be stored In Bond in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse or delivered directly to you. When you decide to take delivery, Duty and VAT at the prevailing rate become payable.
