The Monthly Six | November

This month’s Monthly Six takes you on a journey around the world, bringing together six distinctive wines from Italy, France, Germany, Spain and New Zealand.

From the citrus and almond notes of Soave in Verona to the crisp freshness of Riesling from Germany’s Nahe and the delicate minerality of Pinot Bianco from Alto Adige, the whites showcase the diversity and character of their regions. The reds continue the journey, from the warmth and richness of Corbières in southern France to the refined elegance of Rioja, before finishing in Central Otago, with vibrant fruit and freshness.

  • Goedhuis, August 2023

This Premier Cru level vineyard was inherited from the side of the Donnhoff family that were professional beer brewers. For that reason, the label has a special logo in the bottom right corner of a devil riding a barrel. This plot sits on a pocket of red sandstone which is very rare in the Nahe and gives pleasing weight and a beautiful earthy spice to the salty citrus flavours and mineral laden finish. Drink 2023-2035+

The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad is from Permian red sandstone. Despite much swirling, the nose is rather shy and does not want to give up any secrets. The taut palate is more forthcoming with a bright, crystal-clear lemon note. The 2022 is a linear wine with a proper streak of lemon zestiness and a deep well of ripe lemon freshness that is serene, streamlined, clear and lasting. Lovely. The fine acidity is buffered with a beautiful, subtle length. Drink 2025-2045.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, March 2025

Part of the famous C.V.N.E stable, this special wine is named in honour of the Real de Asúa brothers who founded C.V.N.E. in the 1870s. Sourced entirely from 100% Tempranillo grapes grown in Villalba, the smallest village in Rioja Alta, the vineyard benefits from a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate that imparts remarkable freshness and elegance. Fermented at the historic Imperial winery and aged for 18 months in oak, followed by at least 18 months in bottle, the wine is matured in a warehouse designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel. The result is a beautifully poised Rioja Reserva, bursting with pure red fruit layered with notes of liquorice, freshly roasted coffee, violets, cigar wrappers, and forest floor. Beautifully polished and sumptuous, with velvety tannins, intricately crafted with a lovely elegant lift, this is drinking very well now and will age for a further decade. We love its label depicting a painting by the famous Spanish artist Eduardo Arroyo Rodríguez.

  • Raymond Chan, Score: 93

Moderately deep crimson, slightly lighter on the rim. The nose is bright and gently full, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, thyme, earth and delicate spice. Medium-bodied, aromas of black cherry and blackberry are succulent and ripe, entwined with thyme, black pepper and earth. A silky yet firm tannin grip provides structure, along with lively acidity, supporting a lengthy, savoury finish. An appealing Pinot Noir reflects its origin, showcasing its silky fine structure and ripe black fruit core. Match with lamb and mushroom risotto over the next 3-5 years. Fruit from Bannockburn, fermented with 15% whole bunch, aged in French barrels for 10 months, 25% new oak.
