André Perret 2024 | New releases from the star of Condrieu

André Perret has an astonishing gift for producing light-footed, complex Viogniers from the granite soils of Condrieu. Crafting cellar worthy wines from this fickle variety is no easy task but Andre’s sophisticated examples taste delicious both in youth and with bottle age. Since 2020 André has been joined by daughter Marie, who spent time making wine in Chile before coming back to join the family estate.

The attention to detail in the vineyard and winery is apparent when tasting through the 2024s. The Condrieus are exceptionally good in this vintage, striking the perfect balance between expressive fruit and steely minerality. The St Joseph white and red are just as impressive, showcasing the Perret’s trademark energising freshness.

A lieu-dit of very decomposed granite, and more south-west facing. The register of fruit is turned way up here, much richer and bolder on the nose – full of rich, ripe exotic fruit, juicy pears and melon, and white blossom. On the palate it’s more muscular and generous, really concentrated and with such power. Wonderful concentration of fruit and amazing streak of salinity coming through, but will benefit from some brief cellaring for it to truly come into its own.

  • Vinous, January 2026, Score: 94

The enticing 2024 Condrieu Chéry breaks the surface with pronounced apricot, white peach, melon and honeysuckle. Pear and jasmine add more nuance. Large-framed and utterly fresh, the 2024 is a delicious Condrieu Chéry, bringing the elements into line with a subtle sensation of salinity and wet stone on the long and mineral last flourish. Drink: 2026-2035

  • Jeb Dunnuck, January 2026, Score: 95-97

In contrast to the more mineral-driven Clos Chanson, the 2024 Condrieu Chery is riper and more exotic, with honeyed orchard fruits, orange blossoms, minty flowers, and chalky minerality on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, with a layered, nicely concentrated mouthfeel and outstanding length.

Pure and striking, with notes of purple and blue fruit, lavender, myrtle, and violets. Firm yet lively and delicious, showing lovely balance and a long, polished finish.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, January 2026, Score: 91-93

A much more cool-climate inspired effort, the 2024 Saint Joseph reveals juicy, crunchy red and black fruits intermixed with pepper, smoke, and sappy herbs on the nose. It brings solid richness on the palate and is medium-bodied, has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and shows the more finesse-driven yet still concentrated style of this estate. While known largely for their Condrieu, this estate makes brilliant, age-worthy Saint-Josephs!

60-year-old vines, with more clay in the vineyard here. A nose of absolutely soaring aromatics – honeysuckle, orange blossom, with a core of ripe apricots and peaches. Wonderful mineral spine of crushed chalk. A touch of lavender sits on the top of the palate. Green tea and galangal and ginger. Incredibly elegant. Gossamer like, glides across the palate. These wines are so successful in this vintage.

  • Vinous, January 2026, Score: 94

Using grapes from roughly 70-year-old vines planted on the same-name lieu-dit, the 2024 Condrieu Clos Chanson pours out initial aromas of perfumed lemon flesh, linden blossom, honeysuckle, early-ripe peach and apricot. White flowers add more floral lift. Poised between medium and full in body and notably concentrated, the 2024 ends with outstanding finesse and persistence on the focused finish. Drink: 2026-2035

  • Jeb Dunnuck, January 2026, Score: 93-95

The warmest lieu-dit at the estate, the 2024 Condrieu Clos Chanson sports a beautiful medium gold hue as well as exotic aromatics of honeyed peach, white flowers, and chalky minerality. It's medium-bodied and focused, has wonderful overall balance, a terrific sense of minerality, and outstanding length. It's very much in the style of the vintage and will be a beautiful Condrieu.

Les Schistes is Clusel Roch’s 'calling card' Côte Rôtie. A traditional blend of 95% Syrah with some old plantings of Viognier and 15% whole bunch fermented fruit. It comes from four parcels in the Côte Brune, where both young and old vines are planted on mica-schist soils. Really bright fruit on the palate, with a ferrous mineral drive at the core. Expressive, delicate fruit – violets and red cherry and cherry pips, and some lavender and rosemary too. Beautifully balanced, with the tannins gently framing the fruit. Wonderfully poised and executed in this vintage.

  • John Livingstone-Learmonth, October 2025, Score: ****

**** quite a full red robe; the nose is homely, on raspberry, gives an orderly display, light herbs present. The palate serves clear red fruit, spark en route, iron filings late, has fresh, a touch vegetal length. It can amplify during its raising. “We usually use 30% whole bunch on Les Schistes, but this year we were only at 15-20% - the stems weren’t very ripe,” Guillaume Clusel. 22 years 2) (2018 cask) **** clear red; the nose has a red cherry, cherry stone tang aroma, is pretty together. The palate has a blood-iron intro, a good sense of droiteur, clear length, channels itself well. I like the spark of the cool length and its fruit, while the tannins blend in well. It has enough juice intensity to handle the tannins. Solid **** quality. From 2028. 23 years 2047-49

La Vialliere is arguably the best vineyard in this part of the schist-rich Côte Brune, at the very north of the Côte Rotie appellation. 40-year-old vines. Deep and dark and quite brooding. Really rich fruit, belying the vintage. Spicy and fine, with glossy raspberries and plums, with a touch of dark chocolate and freshly roasted coffee. Elegant and sleek on the palate, fresh and complete already.

  • John Livingstone-Learmonth, October 2025, Score: ***(*)

sound red colour; the nose has a raspberry, nutty air, crushed red berries, the tang of cherry stone. The palate has a light grain tone through it, cut in the fruit. The tannins are linear, pumice stone-like. It’s quite naked, has a fresh exit, but needs three years at least to provide more richness. 2049-51

A new-ish cuvee, this being the third vintage in which it’s been produced. From 5 separate plots (hence the name) of Montmain, Cote Rozier, Leyat, Bonniviere, Fongeant – all from the precarious slopes of the Cote Brune, varying from 80 year old vines to 20 year old vines. This was enormously impressive tasting out of barrel (already blended). Such a sense of harmony, richness and depth to this wine already, as well as having the domaine’s hallmark laser mineral focus. Pinoté register to the fruit, but with brilliant Syrah depth, this is shaping up to be a wine of wonderful purity and finesse.

  • John Livingstone-Learmonth, October 2025, Score: ****(*)

clear red robe; the bouquet is shapely, red cherry prominent, smoked bacon, a firm air of crushed raspberry. The palate has a springy debut, Burgundian styling, which means it’s clear, has a hint of Pinot, late spice after the fruit purity, is a nuanced wine of interest, can be studied, holds well into the finish, a good combination of dark red juice and iron on the exit. From 2029-30. 2052-54
