An insider’s guide to Burgundy’s hidden gems | Bourgogne Rouge 2022

The 2022 Burgundian vintage is already shaping up to be one for the books, delivering Pinot Noirs with ripe, expressive fruit, fragrant aromatics, fine, integrated tannins, and alcohol levels sitting neatly around 13-13.5%. Now, with four years in bottle, the earlier-drinking appellations are really starting to hit their stride and deliver some joyous drinking.

Many of the top Grand Cru’s have prices which are now beyond the reach of many wine lovers, but Burgundy has so much more to offer.  With that in mind, we are delighted to celebrate the humble entry point to the Burgundy pyramid: the Bourgogne Rouge. Often overlooked in favour of grander appellations, Bourgogne Rouge comes into its own in vintages such as 2022 and offers marvellous everyday drinking.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This is a fine parcel of Pinot Noir, planted in 1963. The vines lie on the edge of the village on clay soil. They have a more northerly exposure, enjoying the sunshine from around 9:00 AM. 20% whole bunch and 20% new oak, striking red fruit flavours of redcurrant and raspberry. Forward drinking with a hint of nutmeg on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 87

The 2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from vines planted in 1965/66 that tend to suffer millerandage, so this is fully de-stemmed and matured in 25% new oak. It has quite a lush and rounded bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, open-knit. The palate is fresh and lively, with a dab of sour cherry intermixed with black plum, just a little sharp on the astringent finish. Quite a serious Pinot Noir. Fine. Drinking Window: 2024-2032.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2023, Score: 87-89

All on the same hillside facing north. One plot dates back to 1937 and the rest from the 1960s. Just 20% whole bunch and all raised in wood. A similar pink edged purple colour, just a little more intense than the Hautes Cotes. The nose is more restrained but still shows a quality pinot, then more structure, slightly tough tannins, and good acidity. This will need a couple of years but will emerge at the end very well. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

The grapes for this cuvée were the last to be harvested, some 15 days after Fabien started picking on 5th September. This wine expresses the vibrant freshness one expects from the higher slopes of the Côte de Nuits, with charming raspberry and strawberry fruit flavours and a gentle alcohol level of 13%.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 86-88

There is enough reduction present to push the fruit to the background. More interesting are the racy and delicious middleweight flavors that retain good detail and a subtle minerality on the dusty, inviting and refreshing finish. This should be approachable young after 2 to 3 years of keeping. Drinking 2025+.

These vines are in a higher altitude location in the Hautes Côtes above Nuits St Georges. A lovely representation of Pinot Noir’s delicacy and purity. Crystal clear red cherry and raspberry fragrance, direct and mouth-watering with an appealing line of fresh acidity on the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 85-87

All destemmed. Racked and sulphured yesterday. Brisk crimson, though the nose shows the recent treatment. This currently lacks purity, which could be barrel, with a fresh zesty finish, higher acidity than expected. Drink from 2025-2028.

Radiant purple raspberry colour. Strikingly bright aromas with characters of cranberry and bitter cherry. On the palate it combines a soft easy charm, with edgy bright red fruit flavours, pomegranate and fresh cherry and rewarding palate cleansing freshness at the end.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 88

A ruby touch to the colour. Very pretty bouquet, this is high class pinot, a little bit floral but more importantly vivid red fruits. Plus, a notable structure at the finish, so this will need a little more time than many a Bourgogne. Drink from 2026-2028.
