A bright, clean nose of red apple and pink grapefruit. Notes of yuzu and ginger bring an aromatic lift, while a small proportion of Gin Gin clone Chardonnay lends a little grip and texture to the palate. Fresh, precise and fine, with an appealing unctuous quality to the fruit.

A blend of Gingin and Bernard clones planted in '97 in Gruyere. Fermented and matured in mainly puncheons and one new 1200L foudre. Expressive with aromas of stone fruits, candied ginger, grapefruit and roasted hazelnut. Just as good on the beautifully concentrated mid-palate, finishing with mouth-watering acidity on the very long, pithy finish. An excellent Sexton to drink now and over the next six to eight years.

Taut and tensile, with bright lemon sorbet, generous ripe orchard fruit and a flinty, reductive edge. From the cooler upper Yarra Valley, this is steely and more linear in style than the Sexton. There is a lovely tension between the wine’s polished, rounded texture and its incisive mineral backbone, with a lick of salinity on the finish.

I am fully on-board with this release of Applejack Chardonnay. It’s a beauty. Pure, long, showing a little more flint than usual, all line and length in general but with a bit of extra punch and flare on top. This is tight and taut and tense and all those things, but wow does it extend and wow does it thrill. We’re in chardonnay for chardonnay lovers territory. White peach, cedar, lactose, a touch of lemonade; the sum is far more than the parts. Fantastic wine. Compelling. Intense. On a mission

Ripe strawberries and forest berries are complimented by a Gevrey-like savoury spice and scorched earth. The ironstone soils bring a distinctive sanguine quality to the wine, and the fine-grained tannins give a firmness to the structure. Standly boldly in its line up, this is a beautiful wine of stature and power

Mid garnet. Savoury nose and lovely delicate, but ripe, palate. Really rather burgundian, if I’m allowed to say that. Very pleasing, well balanced and juicy in the way that a fine Beaune is.

Made from six different clones of pinot noir, Applejack is well renowned as one of Australia’s best pinot vineyards. Elegant violets and crunchy raspberries and mulberries, with a touch of Italian herbs, weave their way across the palate. This is silky and cashmere soft; if Sexton reminds us of Gevrey, this has a Chambolle-like finesse with a touch of seductive Aussie juiciness to the fruit.

The perfume when you put your nose in the glass is off the chain! Aromas of wild strawberry, black raspberry, peony, bergamot and Chinese five-spice. Multi-faceted and layered on the medium-bodied palate, with the tannins perfectly interwoven with the fruit. It's incredibly long and will reward cellaring over the next decade or more. Not sure I've tasted a better Applejack Pinot, which is saying something.

From the southern part of Tasmania, where long sunshine hours and cooler temperatures create a distinct style of pinot. A dark fruited pinot expression, with crunchy blackberries, savoury bay leaf and a touch of eucalyptus. A fine line of acidity carries the palate, bringing focus and freshness. A very impressive wine.

Glowing mid-depth crimson that’s more intense than many Pinots. Rich, pure nose with structure and just enough acidity. Very promising! Ideally wait until next year before drinking. (The fine tannins are still in evidence.) Sappy, fresh and lightly spicy.
