The Banghoek Valley is 2 to 3 degrees cooler than the rest of Stellenbosch and this is evident in the cooler Cabernet tones of this gorgeous 2020. Sourced from the lower slopes of the Rondekop where the soils are rich in iron, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon bottling is notable for its fresh core and mouth-watering acidity. Racy and focused yet with lovely, sweet red and black fruit density to match, it is peppered with fresh tobacco, crushed rocks, vanilla pod, cedar and blackcurrant leaf. The smooth tannins give structure to the sumptuous cassis fruit while the bright acidity keeps it nimble and elegant. Only 1,000 cases produced. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2020 Rondekop Per Se offers seductive oak tones with sweet cherry essence, plum blossom and dusty, dark red fruit before bursting with elegant notions of turned earth and baked clay. Locally selling for around 700 rand and easily worth triple that price, the wine exudes layers of complexity with fine-grained tannins and possesses power with finesse. The wine concludes with a long, lingering and mineral-laced finish that has me returning for more. I'll be adding some of this to my cellar when it's available, and I recommend you do too. I'll be keeping an eye on this producer from here on out. Bravo! Drink 2024-2040.

  • Jancis Robinson, September 2023, Score: 16.5

Damask roses on the nose. Dark and light fruit. Blueberries. Lots of fine, fine, powdery tannins which absorb the fruit and become more supple in the process. Unusually peppery for a Cabernet Sauvignon, but it works. It glides into the finish. This would slip down very easily, I suspect. Drink 2024-2030.

  • Greg Sherwood MW, March 2023, Score: 94+

Show and expressive nose of tilled earth, savoury black berry, tobacco, earthy cassis, black cherry, fynbos, delicate dried herbs and graphite… then cherry and parma violet. A fine sinewy line of tannins is evident with a precise mineral focus supported by fresh glassy acids. Opens and develops beautifully in the glass. A very smart Cabernet Sauvignon indeed.

Named after the stone axes discovered in the vineyard’s iron-rich soils that date from over 100,000 years ago, Oldenburg’s fresh, elegant ‘Stone Axe’ Syrah could appear in a blind tasting of Northern Rhone Syrah and never be caught out thanks to its cool granite terroirs. The 2020 is packed with soft red cherry and blue fruits plus iris, lavender, thyme and delicious white pepper. A small amount of whole bunch fermentation (18%) and maturation in a combination of Stockinger casks and smaller barrels, old and new, gives a gorgeous vivid fruit profile and well-judged spice, a glorious backdrop to the gleaming acidity and soft, powdery tannins. Only 750 cases produced. Drink 2023-2032.

A lovely, well-spiced nose of white pepper, suede, sage and grilled plum. Medium-bodied with silky tannins. Nicely layered, with black fruit and spicy complexity. Focused, but expressive. Drink now.

  • Tim Atkin, March 2023, Score: 94

The evocatively named Stone Axe Syrah hails from a single parcel on mixed granite and sandstone soils that was picked in four stages. Nic van Aarde used 30% whole bunches for texture and perfume here, producing a red with thyme and oregano aromas, gentle tannins, lots of zip and vibrancy and subtle oak. Very promising. Drink 2024-2030.

  • Greg Sherwood MW, March 2023, Score: 94

Plenty of tarry, smoky black bramble berry fruits, olive, sweet black peppercorns, grilled herbs, cured meats and saline black berry fruits. Palate is super sleek and elegant with lovely intensity but light touch intensity, pristine purity and a weightless, savoury, spicy concentration with manicured tannins. Wonderfully characterful, classy and pure but beautifully classical. Very impressive.

Banghoek’s cooler climate means that the area is ideally suited for the production of more elegant and Burgundian styles of Chardonnay. Fermented and matured in French oak, this is a full, malolactic style with wonderful textural richness and a delicate creaminess front and centre. Showing aromas of ripe orchard fruit and honey, there is precision and mouth-watering freshness on the palate, with toasted brioche notes adding further depth to the finish. On a par with any great premier cru Burgundy.

  • Neal Martin, August 2024, Score: 92

The 2023 Chardonnay comes from the Banhoek Valley, harvested from seven-year-old vines after the entire vineyard was replanted to make it virus-free. It has a fresh and lively nose, with lemon sherbet and orange zest tincturing the citrus fruit and touches of flint developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a mineral-driven opening, good tension and slight reduction. Lightly spiced on the finish, this is a very commendable showing, especially considering the youth of the vines. Drink 2024-2034.

Nic van Aarde’s skill as a white winemaker is on show with his Chenin of 2023. A blend of both old and young vines, this is an intensely aromatic and complex wine, displaying notes of fresh nectarines, orange rind, and touches of lanolin. On the palate, there is a freshness and lively lemon zest coming to the fore, while more stone fruits such as apricot and peach can be found on the finish. Thanks to its ancient granite terroir, the wine has a saline edge, which cuts through the richness. There’s a reason why this is a staff favourite.
