  • Neal Martin, May 2018, Score: 91

The 1995 Pichon-Baron is a wine that tasted extremely well several years ago, but I wonder how well it is continuing to evolve. The bouquet feels a little smudged, scents of iodine and cassis merging with blackberry and pencil lead; it is a little meandering and missing a sense of focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity and good density, but it doesn’t possess the clarity and detail of more recent vintages. Solid, but lacks flair. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. 2018-2035

  • Robert Parker, April 1996, Score: 89-91

Pichon-Baron continues to build on the success it established in the late eighties with its three consecutive top-notch vintages of 1988, 1989, and 1990. The initial impression of the 1995 is one of extraordinarily pure cassis fruit. I had this wine on three occasions, and while it does not measure up to the 1989 or 1990, it possesses an expansive mid-section, superb ripeness, medium body, and high tannin in the impressively long finish. The wine is backward, but the low acidity and high extract should come together to create an outstanding claret. At this stage, the 1995 Pichon-Longueville-Baron (made by the same winemaking team as Lynch Bages) appears to be the better of those two wines. This 20-year wine will require 4-5 years of cellaring after its release. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux. Drink: 2000-2016.

  • Robert Parker, January 1998, Score: 91

An opaque purple color and sweet, toasty, chocolatey, black currant aromas are followed by a wine with outstanding richness, an impressive, fleshy, medium to full-bodied personality, and fine length. The 1995 is not as flamboyant as the remarkable 1990, or as concentrated as the massive 1989, but this is a beautifully made, outstanding wine that recalls the 1988 in its weight and texture. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020. Last tasted 1/97.

  • Robert Parker, February 1998, Score: 90

A stylish, elegant, more restrained style of Pichon Baron, with less obvious new oak than usual, this deep ruby/purple-colored wine offers a pure black currant-scented nose with subtle aromas of coffee and smoky toasty oak. In the mouth, the wine displays less weight and muscle than the 1996, but it offers suave, elegant, rich fruit presented in a medium to full-bodied, surprisingly lush style. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2016.

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Along with Pichon Lalande, this estate was only one of two Pauillacs to be classified as a secondgrowth in 1855. They have rivalled each other ever since. However, Pichon Baron has remained inthe shadow of its more illustrious neighbour often enabling it to provide good value for money.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
