Robert Parker, January 1998, Score: 87-88
This beauty appears to be a potential sleeper of the vintage. The 1996 Lanessan, a classic Bordeaux, exhibits a dense, murky purple color, and copious quantities of jammy, rich, cassis fruit, intermingled with minerals and spicy oak. This deep, medium-bodied, and well-endowed offering is a textbook Medoc from one of the finest terroirs of the cru bourgeois chateaux. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015. Last tasted 3/97.

Robert Parker, April 1997, Score: 87-88
A lighter-styled, more structured wine for La Lagune, the 1996 displays a deep ruby/purple color, light tannin, good fruit, and, surprisingly, not as much new oak as is normally found in this wine during its youth. There is fine purity, as well as a nicely-textured, medium weight feel on the palate. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016.

Robert Parker, February 1998, Score: 87-89
Tannic and austere, yet amply endowed, the dark ruby/purple-colored 1996 La Lagune exhibits spicy new oak, attractive berry, plum-like fruit, and toughness on the palate. I was impressed by the way the wine developed in the glass. It possesses sweet fruit, and expands on the palate. This wine could turn out to merit an even higher rating. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.

Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 86
This is a tannic, austere 1996, but it is well-endowed. Copious aromas of spicy new oak are present in the moderately intense bouquet, as well as cherry notes intertwined with dried herbs. The wine is medium-bodied and well-made, with good spice, a slight austerity, and moderate tannin in the long finish. In many vintages La Lagune can be drunk at an early age, but this effort will require 5-6 years of patience. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018.

Jancis Robinson, September 2006, Score: 15/20
Mid crimson. Slightly weak rim. Fully evolved, not desperately layered nose. Rather dry tannins on the finish. As ready as it will ever be probably as the fruit is not especially intense. Jancis Robinson Score 15/20 Drink Dates 2003 - 2007
Region
Haut-Médoc
The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
