  • Neal Martin, September 2019, Score: 88

The 1999 Lynch-Bages, now at 20 years of age, has a modest, quite attractive bouquet of blackberry, dried fig, leather and faint touches of mint. There is still good vigor here considering its age. The palate is medium-bodied with relatively light tannins for Lynch-Bages. There is a core of sweetness here, hints of brown sugar sprinkled over the light red fruit that appears to have faded in recent years. A simple Lynch-Bages relative to recent vintages, rather conservative and missing some grip on the finish. Drink over the next 5 to 8 years. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate. Drink 2019 - 2027

  • Robert Parker, August 2011, Score: 90

A charming, lush, round, generous Lynch Bages, the 1999 offers plenty of sweet black currant fruit, damp earth, licorice, cedarwood and spicy herb-like characteristics. Medium-bodied, savory and broad in the mouth with no hard edges, this fully mature effort is a somewhat underrated vintage for this estate. Enjoy it over the next decade. Drink: 2011 - 2021.

  • Robert Parker, April 2002, Score: 90

This dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 is a modern day clone of this estate's wonderful 1962. The 1999 reveals forward, open-knit notes of creme de cassis and earth. It is fleshy, medium to full-bodied, and succulent, with supple tannin, excellent balance, as well as a long, pure, ripe finish. This seductive effort will drink well for 12-15 years, possibly longer. Drink: 2002 - 2017.

  • Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 90-91

A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet, fat, creme de cassis aromas and flavors intermixed with leather, underbrush, and cedar. Displaying a gorgeous texture, full body, and a precocious, sexy, low acid personality, it will drink well upon release and over the following 15 years. Drink: 2001 - 2016.

  • Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 90-93

Lynch-Bages has fashioned their sexiest, most succulent effort since the hedonistic fruit bomb produced in 1990. Displaying a dense purple color as well as low acidity, this blackberry and cassis-flavored 1999 possesses a fat, juicy mid-section, and outstanding purity, ripeness, and glycerin in the long finish, which oozes over the palate with no bumps. The tannin is well-concealed by the wealth of chewy fruit. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, approximately 75% of the production made it into the final wine. Anticipated maturity: now-2015

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2001, Score: 17

Another flamboyant wine from Lynch-Bages with a very deep colour. The fruit is spicy and dramatic with lots of layers of flavour already (all too rare in this vintage). Chewy finish promises a long life.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
