  • Goedhuis, April 2001

Outstanding at the St Emilion tasting this is a really interesting, pure, savoury winethat stands out for its lack of extraction. Delicious.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 93

The 2000 Grand Mayne has a well-defined, quite complex bouquet with singed leather and sage infusing the dusky red fruit, perhaps more introverted juxtaposed against the 1998. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins. This is full of energy thanks to the acidity, countering the richness that really shows towards the velvety smooth, dark chocolate tinged finish. Quite sensual for a millennial Bordeaux, this is beginning to show what it can do. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property. 2021-2035

  • Robert Parker, June 2010, Score: 93

A consistent winner in both quality and value, the dark plum/garnet-tinged 2000 Grand-Mayne reveals a sweet nose of blueberry pie intermixed with forest floor and floral undertones. Deep, opulent, round, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature St.-Emilion that should drink well for another decade.

  • Robert Parker, April 2003, Score: 93

It will be hard for the opaque ruby/purple-colored 2000 to surpass the spectacular 1998, but it appears Grand Mayne is more and more becoming the Lynch Bages of St.-Emilion. The corpulent, fleshy, hedonistic 2000 is loaded with concentrated black fruits infused with vanilla and espresso notes. Large-scaled and delicious, it is an attention-getter, but not overdone. The oak is beautifully integrated, the acidity low, and the tannin sizeable but ripe. A blockbuster effort, this admirably pure and balanced wine will be at its finest between 2005-2018. P.S. It held up five days in bottle without any trace of oxidation

  • Jancis Robinson, February 2005, Score: 15.5

First bottle: Deep healthy crimson. Interesting, intriguing, refreshing, St-Emilion nose with real fragrance and lift. Quite a bit of acidity still - just not too much - and lots of dry tannins. There is fruit here but certainly overworked fruit. Is this 100 per cent clean? Finishes quite dry and suddenly. A little stern. Second bottle: Much less aromatic. Big, ripe but not so fragrant start and then very mouth-puckering tannins. Over-extracted, I fear. Drink 2010-2020

Region

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
