As always this is one of the most elegant, feminine wines of the Medoc, one of the most appealingand seductive. It has great length, purity and a silken structure. One of the stars of the vintage. April 2002

  • Neal Martin, October 2007, Score: 90

This is lacking some complexity on the nose compared to the other wines in the flight with simple aromas of wild strawberry, leather and a touch of chestnut. But things improve hereon in. The palate is medium-bodied, lacks a little acidity, quite tight with dense black dusty fruit. The finish is better with good definition but very broody at the moment.

  • Neal Martin, November 2005, Score: 90-92

This is a commendable wine from Mme. Gasqueton's venerable estate. An attractive, tobacco scented nose with hints of charred wood is followed by a medium-bodied palate, perhaps a little muffled but with a lovely classicism about it. Very natural, masculine, conservative even but great good length and grip. Very fine, from 2008.

  • Robert Parker, June 2004, Score: 90

I suspect this 2001 will shut down (as most young Calon-Segurs do), although it appears more forward and evolved than the huge, backward, but totally dormant 2000. The plum/ruby-colored 2001 reveals aromas of damp earth, cranberries, cherries, herbs, and forest floor. While lighter than its older sibling, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and should emerge from its post-bottling sleep in 4-5 years, and drink well for 14-15. Think of it as a lighter-weight 1988 (one of the stars of the vintage). Drink 2008-2019

Château Calon-Ségur

Though he also owned such celebrated châteaux as Lafite and Latour, he would proudly state: "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon." He immortalised his affection by creating a heart on the label - a symbol that exists to this day. Calon-Ségur was owned and managed for many years by Mme. Denise Capbern Gasqueton, a magical hostess who captures the essence of La Vieille France with all its tradition, elegance and etiquette. She sadly passed away in 2011 but the inate quality of the vineyards ensures Calon-Ségur's place among the top wines of the appellation.Read less

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
