  • Goedhuis, 2007

Marenca is a special micro-climate that tends to produce wines that have notable structure andcomplexity. And it does not disappoint in 2003. Uplifting and discreet on the nose, it expresseslightly toasted cinnamon, rose petals and plump red berry fruit. Its richness and presence suggestthat it will benefit from several years of cellaring and should be beautiful at its peak.

  • Antonio Galloni, November 2013, Score: 93

Giampaolo Pira's 2003 Barolo Marenca is gorgeous. Dark red cherries, plums, menthol, smoke and dried roses meld together effortlessly in the glass. The 2003 is remarkably young for its age, but there again, we are in Serralunga. If opened today the 2003 needs a lot of air to allow the searing tannins to soften. The 2003 is pretty much mature, but it has enough depth to drink well for another 5 maybe 10 years. This is a fabulous showing for the year. 2015-2023

  • Robert Parker, 2007, Score: 91

Pira's 2003 Barolo Marenca is made in a similarly rich, powerful style, yet it also possesses moredepth in its fruit to balance the wine's hefty structural components. Sweet and ample on thepalate, it gradually reveals new leather and roasted coffee notes that complement the fruit and add further complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018.

Particularly as our Italian and Gianpaolo's English are extremely limited. Yet, like most cross cultural love affairs, ourcommunication just seems to work. Wine really does work magic in more ways than one.Read less

Region

Barolo

With Brunello in Tuscany, Barolo is undoubtedly Italy's finest wine producing region. Located in Piedmont in the north west of Iataly Barolo is comprised of 5 major communes - Barolo, Monteforte d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba - though the latter three tend to represent the main styles of the region. The wines are compelling and polished - an exemplary expression of the Nebbiolo grape. DOCG law requires a minimum ageing of 2 years in cask or barrel yet can be longer depending on the producer. Barolos are generally released four or more years after the vintage.
