  • Goedhuis, April 2004

A wine that we usually avoid has performed exceptionally well this year. The Wine Spectator describes it as a 'serious effort' praising its silky tannins, length of flavour and intensity of fruit. It certainly impressed us too.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 91

A brilliant success, the fully mature 2003 Batailley exhibits a dense plum/garnet color in addition to a sweet perfume of creme de cassis, licorice, forest floor and spice. Round, generous and medium to full-bodied with good acidity and well-integrated, melted tannins, this 2003 can be enjoyed now and over the next 10+ years.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 88

Dark ruby/purple with hints of melted licorice, underbrush, black currants, and cedar, this is a surprisingly elegant, mid-weight Medoc with relatively high tannins, old-style, classic austerity, and the need for some bottle age. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15-16 years. Drink: Now-2025

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 89-92

One of the most impressive Batailleys I have tasted over the last quarter-century, this is a potent, concentrated effort with surprisingly good acidity and freshness for a 2003. Dense ruby purple in color with a classic nose of black currants, cedar, and damp earth along with some tobacco leaf, the wine is rich, powerful, moderately tannic and youthful. This wine needs 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for at least two decades. Drink: Now-2025

  • James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 89-91

Intense aromas of currants, blackberries and lead pencil. Full-bodied, with silky tannins. Long on the palate. Rich. Serious effort here. -- J.S.

  • Decanter, April 2004

Huge colour, seductively ripe fruit, quite smoky, good concentration, finishes a little hard. Drink: Now-2020.

For many years it was not traded amongst traditional Bordeaux circles which contributed to its lesser known stature. This has changed only over the past couple of years. For some time now, Château Batailley has represented one of the best values in Bordeaux. Traditional and stylish, it often embodies the quintessential Pauillac spirit offering distinguished aromas of cedar box, and cassis enveloped in a finely structured yet fresh palate.Read less

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
