  • Goedhuis, may 2011

The 2008 Sassicaia opens up with an elegant and earthy nose of roasted spice, dried fruits, blood oranges and cocoa. Its tannins are ripe and mouthfilling yet its palate is fine-tuned and pure with lovely layers and complexity. Cinnamon and clove surface on the finish. This is one impressive wine…and only 13.5% in alcohol. Exceptional.

  • Goedhuis, April 2011

Lifted and scented, it opens up with notes blood orange, cocoa, crunchy red cherries and exotic spice. Lovely layers with notable complexity. The domaine feels it is one of their best and compares it to the 2006 in structure, the 2007 in aromatics and the 2001 in finesse. Just wonderful.

  • Antonio Galloni, August 2011, Score: 96

The 2008 Sassicaia is a rich, deep wine imbued with notable class in its black cherries, plums, grilled herbs, minerals and smoke. The 2008 is a decidedly buttoned-up, firm Sassicaia that is currently holding back much of its potential, unlike the 2006 and 2007, both of which were far more obvious wines. Readers who can afford to wait will be treated to a sublime wine once this settles down in bottle. Muscular, firm tannins frame the exquisite finish in this dark, implosive Sassicaia. The 2008 Sassicaia is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. The wine spent 24 months in French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.

Noticeably distinct from the lighter styled wines of the region, the bold expression of Cabernet was not initially well received by the Italian drinking public. As a result, from 1948 to 1960, the wines were consumed only at the estate. The 1968 vintage marked its first commercial release. As Bordeaux blends grew in popularity over the years, Sassicaia was able to create a reputationunparalleled amongst its Super Tuscan peers. Recognising their unique terroir and exceptionalquality, they were even granted their own DOC in 1994 named accordingly, Bolgheri Sassicaia.Keeping these distinctions in mind, a winery of movie set proportions had been expected. Yet infact, it is superbly discrete and modest - reminiscent of a domaine in Burgundy or the Rhône.Read less

Region

Bolgheri

The medieval town of Bolgheri was originally made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who wrote about the stunning Cypress Avenue, a breathtaking and magical three mile long corridor of trees leading up to the entrance to the village. Swept away to the coastal and most westerly area of Tuscany, Bolgheri has become synonymous with wines known as ‘Super Tuscans'. Composed of classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (intermixed with the occasional Sangiovese), the Super Tuscans began as mere experimentation in the 1960s and 70s. These international French varieties flourished in Bolgheri's warm, yet maritime climate which resulted in unexpected success and reknown. It is here that one finds such famous names as Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
