  • Antonio Galloni, March 2014, Score: 95

Soft, silky tannins set the backdrop for the 2011 Mazis-Chambertin. Sweet floral notes meld into red berries and cinnamon. Dried rose petal and violet nuances inform the layered, intensely perfumed finish. The flavors are pure, striking and lifted. In other words: classic Mazis. This is another wine that has developed beautifully over the last year. Drink 2021-2033

  • Burghound, January 2013, Score: 92-95

An attractively fresh and pure nose of remarkably complex red berry fruit aromas and a multitude of different floral and spice elements precede intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a supple yet quite finely detailed mid-palate. There is a very mild touch of rusticity to the powerful, impeccably well-balanced and gorgeously persistent finish. This is textbook Mazis and well worth considering. Drink 2022+

  • Stephen Tanzer, March 2014, Score: 93+

Good deep red. Subtle aromas of redcurrant, chocolate and game. Densely packed and wild but less open to inspection today than the Clos de la Roche. For a wine dominated by flavors of musky redcurrant and spicy underbrush this is quite high-pitched on the palate. Finishes long and understated, with sneaky tannic clout. Lay this one down for at least seven or eight years.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2012, Score: 18

About 70% whole bunch. Dark crimson. Very dense and pure without excess sweetness on the nose on this one. Gentle and sappy. Some freshness and sap. Lovely stuff. Though still a bit dry on the end. Drink 2020-2040

The 2012 release put him firmly on the map, and since then he has met the challenges of each subsequent vintage with aplomb, producing wines of disarming beauty and grace. The most recent release, his 2016s, mark a high point in the canon, where glossy fruit is perfectly paired with luxurious but refined oak (he uses 100% new French oak, in barrels custom made for each cuvée by the cooper Chassin).Read less

Region

Mazis Chambertin

Mazis-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the north of the Grand Cru area of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard lies on a limestone subsoil, topped with brown, chalky soil. It is sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Mazis-Chambertin is very aromatic, dark in colour and long lasting.
