Goedhuis, April 2013, Score: 87-90
A very giving style with sweet black-cherry fruit flavours and good, fresh, driven intensity. A well balanced example of St Estephe for mid-term drinking.

Neal Martin, May 2013, Score: 88-90
Tasted as a barrel sample at the château. The 2012 Les Ormes de Pez, a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot (the highest percentage due to lower Cabernet yields), 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, has a very concise, directed bouquet with pure blackberry and cassis aromas suggesting some lovely ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a citric thread of acidity, though is it missing some weight and “girth” towards the finish. This should constitute a decent early drinking Saint Estephe. Tasted April 2013.

Robert Parker, April 2013, Score: 85-87
Good acidity along with fresh, clean cut red and blue fruits characterize this straightforward, meaty, fruity offering. It lacks some concentration, complexity and overall gravitas, but it does offer good fruit and ripe tannin in a medium-bodied, easygoing style. Consume it over the next 7-8 years. Drink 2013 - 2021

Black. First sample that seems a little tired on the nose. Lacks vitality and zest. But this may well be a sample thing. NB!!! Drink 2018-2028

Wine Spectator, April 2013, Score: 88-91
Bright and open-knit, with cherry and damson plum fruit carried by sleek, silky tannins. The tangy minerality takes over on the finish, revealing the austere side of the vintage. Exhibits fine range. —J.M.
Region
St Estèphe
St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
