  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 91-93

As always a very stylish and polished wine from this fine estate on the edge of Margaux. Masses of plums and dark fruits, this is a graceful and giving style, with finely balanced tannins and a lovely, moreish finish.

The 2015 La Lagune has a rich and slightly heady bouquet with lavish black cherry and cassis fruit that need to obtain more definition and composure. This seems to be trying a little hard. The palate is ripe and rounded on the entry, the tannin here a little stringy with a straightforward, slightly attenuated and saline finish that I hope will flesh out during élevage. This just lacks the sparkle that I discerned in the 2014 last year - let's see how it turns out in bottle.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 88-91

The 2015 La Lagune is an absolutely delightful Haut-Médoc with forward fruit, lovely juiciness and tons of personality. Sweet tobacco, cedar, menthol, red cherry and earthy notes abound in this expressive, highly nuanced wine.

  • Robert Parker, Feb 2018, Score: 87/100

The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 la Lagune is scented of cassis, crushed red currants and dried herbs with a waft of underbrush. The medium-bodied mouth is chewy and refreshing with a good vibrant fruit core and lively finish. Lisa Perrotti Brown Score 87/100 Drink Dates 2018 - 2027

  • James Suckling, April 2016, Score: 93-94

The finesse and beauty in this wine is really something with blueberry, blackberry and licorice character. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long and gorgeous finish. Tactile and fine.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 17.5+

(65 Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Merlot, 5 Petit Verdot) From this vintage La Lagune will mention Organic Viticulture on the label. The nose here is heavenly with red and black fruits combining perfectly. There is no trace of oak because it is perfectly integrated at this stage. The mid-palate is silky and tender and the finish is superbly long and ripe with stunning poise and control in the tannins. This is a very well-balanced La Lagune and it has the edge on the superb 2014. I also tasted the 2015 Les Cabernets Sauvignons, a pure Cabernet bottling which Caroline Frey has made from time to time to highlight the excellence of her Cabernet and this showed amazing purity and focus, with thrilling weight and density. It has superb ripeness and control and this is all the more impressive because of the slimness of the body. I awarded it a half point more than the blend in my notes.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 17

Unusually deep crimson. Really very luscious on the nose - a full, broad exposition of the vintage on the nose. Heady without being gratuitously sweet. Juicy and lively. Some rigour on the finish as though efforts were consciously made to imbue classic structure. One of the most exciting Lagunes I can remember. Drink 2024-2038

Producer

Château La Lagune

One of the most popular wines during these campaigns - due to its excellent value. Unlike itsclassified companions, La Lagune is the only third growth that is not from a communal appellation.Comprised of very light sandy-gravelly soils, many believe its wines are similar to those of Pomerol or Graves.

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
