  • Goedhuis, October 2016

Medium gleaming ruby in the glass, the 2015 has layers of fruit, flowers and spice woven throughout its intoxicating perfume: violets, raspberries, cinnamon, macerated cherries, smoke. The alluring aroma is followed by the mellifluous flow of silky tannins. Yet this wine also has a spine – there is Syrah’s sinewy shadow lurking underneath, giving structure for the long term. This wine is enough to convince anyone of Syrah’s nobility. Enthralling.

Bernard is slowly moving into retirement having handed over the majority of his St Joseph-based estate to his daughter and son-in-law. But his attempts to finally step into full retirement seem hampered every year by his ardent and sincere passion to tend his precious vines on Hermitage, and to make, year after year, one of the finest examples of Northern Rhône Syrah one can find. He has three small parcels on the famous hill. Fruit from Méal (schist), Greffieux (poor soil at the lower part of the hill), and Bessards (granite) are blended together to create this diamond of a wine. Made in just the way the three generations before him have, the fruit from old vines (some over 100 years) is whole bunch fermented (he doesn’t even have a destemming machine) and undergoes a fairly short maceration period (just 15 days in total), which is followed by ageing in barrel (only 10-15% new).Read less

Region

Hermitage

Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
