    The 2016 de Pez was tasted both at the London UGC and in Bordeaux, though the latter, I feel, was more representative. It has a clean, precise bouquet with almost flinty blackberry aromas, very focused though not powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, nice structure and a slightly reserved style, though I like the spiciness toward the finish. It just needs more substance and vigor. Though it does not match my estimation from barrel, this Saint Estèphe can surprise with age. Perhaps time is the issue? 2023 - 2036

    The 2016 de Pez appears to be benefitting from a long-term replanting program at the estate. This is a blend of 53% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. The IPT is quite high at 80, and there is 13.9% alcohol. It has a pure and comely bouquet with black cherries and blackcurrant pastilles, just a touch of crushed violets that emerge with time. The palate is really quite lovely: very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite saline in the mouth, perhaps the finest tannic structure that I have encountered during many years of tasting this Saint Estèphe, with a long persistent finish. Maybe this is the "dark horse" of the appellation this year. Drink Date 2022 - 2050

    The 2016 de Pez has turned out well. Iron, smoke, savory herbs, menthol and scorched earth all give Pez its distinctive feral, savory profile. The tannins are still a bit tough, but time will help, to some degree. It will be interesting to see what the Roederer group does at de Pez moving forward, now that it is the Rouzaud family's sole holding in Saint-Estèphe. 2021 - 2031

    The 2016 de Pez is a broad, ample wine. Charcoal, smoke, scorched earth, iron, licorice and grilled herbs add aromatic savoriness to a core of intense, dark red fruit. The virile, imposing tannins need time to settle down, but there is plenty to like and look forward to.

    Much darker and swarthier than expected, this is a masculine de Pez which harks back to a bygone era, albeit with brighter fruit. The Cabernet is very dominant and even with low extraction, the IPT is robust and the vintage characteristics have given this wine some serious power.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
